Aidan O’Brien is set to unleash a strong team for the 2024 Betfred St Leger, which takes place at Doncaster racecourse on Saturday 14th September. The seven-times winner won the race 12 months ago with Continuous and the master of Ballydoyle is set to try and claim the crown once again and he has a classy three of the seven declarations. We take a look at the runners for the final Classic of the season.
O’Brien has a wonderful team to send to Town Moor and the first of those that could fly the Ballydoyle flag is current favourite Illinois. The son of Galileo won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and has since gone on to finish second in the Grand Prix de Paris and Great Voltigeur Stakes. A narrow neck winner of the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, Jan Brueghel ensured his 100% record was maintained on the south coast in August and he’s another O’Brien runner that has stamina in abundance. Grosvenor Square blitzed his rivals to win the Irish St Leger trial by 20 lengths last time out and is another that could head across the Irish Sea for O’Brien.

Mon 09 Sep 2024You have to go a fairly long way down the betting before you see a non O’Brien-trained runner, but there will be some classy rivals to the Ballydoyle battalion and David Menuisier’s Sunway is a fascinating entry. Second in the Irish Derby, he then went and finished fourth in the King George against the old horses. This would be an eye-catching move, as he steps up in trip, but against his fellow three-year-olds then he has to come into calculations.
The impressive Irish Oaks winner You Got To Me is a fascinating addition to the line-up and Ralph Beckett’s star three-year-old filly has been supplemented for the race and will step up in trip for this Classic.
