I seem to be cursing the misfortunate animals I place into the titles of this column of late, but hey, hopefully the curse will be lifted today and the horse can run well, along with our one other selection at Southwell.
Hallings Wish - Looks overpriced in an ordinary enough race on the back of a solid 3rd over 1m5f at Lingfield last time out. Gary Moore’s charge drops back in trip here under Timmy Murphy, has been dropped a pound by the handicapper and provided he runs to something like the same effort again today he should go very close indeed.
Gibbes Bay - The hot favourite here - Bobo Mac - has plenty of useful looking form, particularly in Ireland where he was mixing it well with popular names like Champagne Classic and Bon Papa. Made a decent start to his career over here when 2nd at Ludlow a month ago and could well go ahead and win this comfortably, but I can’t help but feel if connections thought he was a world beater, why is he turning up at Southwell for a novice hurdle with a highly attractive handicap mark of 125 if taking his collateral form literally. If he wins fair play, but I’m happy to take him on with Gibbes Bay, a big, backward type who is sure to improve with racing and I reckon he’ll run very well on this better ground after a mid-winter break.
