Three fairly strong fancies at Ludlow today, following a couple of crossbar efforts yesterday. One or two temptations at Wincanton, but it'll be tough going there today, so I'm happy to watch with interest.
1.00 - Melangerie 7/4
2.00 - Actinpieces 5/2
2.35 - Jersey Bean E/w 6/1, double stakes
Melangerie - Has drifted from 11/10 to 7/4 overnight and is a backable proposition at the latter price for the in-form Nicky Henderson, who’s saddled 8 winners from 17 runners in the last 7 days alone and boasts a 31.5% strike rate at Ludlow (22/70) in the last 3 years. This 6yo is developing well and powered clear of a useful prospect last time out, posting a good speed figure in the process. James Bowen claims 5lb once again and although life will be tougher at the weights here against her own sex, I’m hopeful she remains progressive. Her course and distance form seals the deal.
Actinpieces - Doesn’t owe the column anything and is a bit of a heart over head selection at 5/2, but she must have a good chance under these race conditions. Pam Sly’s 7yo grey mare is unbeaten 3-0-3 in Class 3 company, 4-1-8 on Soft ground, she stays well and her jockey has ridden the horse on all bar two of her 21 career starts, teaming up on all six of her career wins to date.
Jersey Bean - Oliver Sherwood’s yard is fairly quiet at the moment he saddles up some nice chances today, including the free-going Jersey Bean. A well related 5yo, this fella was unlucky to unseat at the first last time out and has had 3 weeks off since to recover from a solo tour of Fontwell. The step up in trip today is interesting for the horse and if he gets into a rhythm prominently, he should be difficult to keep out of the places.
