Sam Turner's Best Bets BlogTHE DEFIANT (Musselburgh, 5.10) showed definite signs of ability on his last run of 2018 and has progressed well this season, winning two from three starts including over course and distance 11 days ago.

Sent off at big odds on his first four runs, the gelding was better supported at Newcastle on the Tapeta surface last October and posted a solid fourth position in a race run at a modest pace. However, the switch to Wolverhampton first time out this season on the same surface produced a first victory despite a slow start and taking an age to settle.

Poor at Windsor next when way too keen, he was given his head over course and distance 11 days ago and flew from an unpromising berth never to see another horse. Assuming the same tactics are employed on Monday, then he should be hard to catch.

The Defiant 1pt win @ 2-1

TIAR NA NOG (Windsor, 5.20) should be a nice price following a shocker here in a better race two weeks ago. Prior to that she had track stats that read 212 and clearly her latest running was all wrong. She has only encountered today’s going once before but it was at Goodwood where she ran a decent race considering severe traffic problems early on.

Oisin Murphy gets the ride today and Tiar Na Nog looks worth an each-way play now dropped back in grade.

BELATED BREATH (Windsor, 6.20) had a productive second season, winning three from seven and moving from a mark of 69 up to 85.

Oisin Murphy has guided the filly to all four of her successes - including at Salisbury on good to soft - and is back again.
