I love Royal Ascot, it is perhaps the only flat meeting on the UK/Ire calendar which, like Cheltenham over the jumps, allures punters into wanting to have some kind of betting opinion on every races across the five-day bonanza. We’ll kick off 2018 affairs with a couple of selections in the Queen Anne Stakes.
Recoletos - 2pts to win @ 7/1
I’m not convinced this is the strongest renewal of the Queen Anne Stakes, with the Lockinge form looking ordinary enough on the face of it. This son of Whipper is very interesting and looks certain to run a big race for French handler Carlos Laffon-Parias, if building on the promise of his two wins thus far in 2018, including a career-best in the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp 18 days ago. An RPR of 119 and a Topspeed figure of 100 there suggest he is a potent force in the making and the fact that he stays 10f makes him an even more solid looking bet. He possesses a potent change of gear, one that will come into its own off a championship pace over 8f at Ascot and with the magician that is Olivier Peslier taking the ride, Recoletus at 7/1 is a solid proposition. He’s already experienced Ascot, when 4th to Cracksman in the Qipco Champion Stakes in October. It is reasonable to expect improvement this time now he’s back in trip and arriving at the Berkshire track, having trained on very well through the winter.
Inns Of Court - 0.5pts Ew 16/1
This Andre Fabre trained 4yo has a patchy profile but remains an unexposed and exciting prospect. I’m not sure if he’s an intended runner here, but the race would really suit him. He’s yet to win over a mile which an obvious concern, but he very much caught the eye over 7f at Longchamp first time out this year 11 days ago when 2nd to Polydream, leaving the impression he would come on a tonne for the outing. Inns Of Court gained valuable experience in Group 1 company as a 3yo and he looks sure to prove a more formidable racehorse as a 4yo, so at healthy odds of 16/1 for an open contest, I’ll have a small saver on the Godolphin owned French runner.
