The gelding actually made it a fine four-timer by posting a career-best performance at Chester in mid-July but prior to that had only ever won at Beverley. However, the purple patch came to an end after as the exertions and a rising handicap mark took their toll.
This year has seen the six-year-old beaten twice over hurdles and on every run on the flat but looked to be coming to hand at Chester last time and may have won but for trouble in running. His momentum was knocked badly at a vital stage and by the time he rallied, the winner had flown.
A Beverley track record that reads 5-9 speaks for itself and, although this looks quite tight, Bit Of A Quirke is due another victory.
Bit Of A Quirke 2pt win @ 4-1
SHAMSHON (Brighton, 2.15) is an 11-time winner, most recently over course and distance back in April. Unfortunately, the eight-year-old suffered most of all next time in a re-run of a Goodwood sprint following a false start. Diagnosed with post-race ataxia, he returned to action here over three weeks later but ran poorly.
However, he seems to have come out of the very recent contest with no ill effects and, as a horse that rarely runs a bad race, can resume normal service.
Shamshon 1pt win @ 5-1
A blistering spell at Bath saw her handicap mark rise from 45 to the giddy heights of 62 and that put paid to any more success. However, Toolatetodelegate has gently slid back down the pecking order and is now on a mark of 47, and ran well enough last time against a ready Bath winner.
If she can replicate her Bath figures here (first run at the track) then she shouldn’t be far away.
Toolatetodelegate 1pt ew @ 11-2
