Leg 1: 1.30pm

Leg 1 Selections: (4) Alreet Cha

How much the expected rain softens conditions at Beverley could prove crucial to both Highland Olly and Mysteryofthesands, while Remoji, on paper, looks an obvious type for improvement on her second start for Roger Varian. However, her full sister took a while to come to hand despite a promising debut, and experience is therefore called upon with ALREET CHA given the verdict.

Craig Lidster’s filly has had eight tries to get off the mark, recording three runner-up finishes in a row to start 2024. Those all came on the all-weather, but she made an encouraging return to turf when a close fifth of 19 in a competitive race at York off a mark of 72, form which would see her win this if her habit of finding one too good does not get in the way.

Leg 2: 2.05pm

Leg 2 Selections: (3) Call Me Harswell, (11) Powerful Lady

This looks set to be by far the biggest field to line up in the Hilary Needler Trophy in the last decade, in what is often an informative race. The two selections mirror the profiles of the previous two winners, with CALL ME HARSWELL offering the experience and POWERFUL LADY a once-raced filly with serious potential after a narrow defeat on debut.

The former was well-beaten in Listed company at York on her third start, but 2022 heroine Star Of Lady M bounced back from defeat in a strong race at Chester to land this. Invincible Annice, who finished behind at York and reopposes here, has won since, as has the runner-up from her course and distance victory Larchill Lass, another who also takes her chance in this contest. That form stacks up and her draw in stall 3 should bear no problems.

Powerful lady is the sole Irish representative. The daughter of Hello Youmzain was fourth at Cork on debut, but the second and third, who beat her less than a length, have both won since. Natalia Lupini’s filly led well inside the final furlong that day and could well come on for the run.

Leg 3: 2.40pm

Leg 3 Selections: (1) Moving Force

Wathnan Racing and Karl Burke have both introduced some speedy types already this season, but his price is short for a debutant in a conditions race of this nature. Richard Fahey has won two of the last four renewals, and MOVING FORCE, unlike that pair, won on debut coming into this race.

A son of Mehmas, he secured his victory despite having to race widest throughout over course and distance last month. He will have to concede 7lb to the favourite, but with winning experience on his side at this track, he is the more appealing value option and could improve at a similar rate.

Leg 4: 3.15pm

Leg 4 Selections: (6) Eligible, (11) Ugo Gregory

Two eight-year-olds are selected to roll back the years in leg four. Favourite Tropez Power shaped promisingly at York, but no more so than ELIGIBLE, who was only half-a-length behind him and got even less of a clear run through the closing stages. He has been dropped 2lb for that run unlike the favourite, who remains on the same mark, and that looks a wayward assessment, especially considering their respective prices here.

Further down, should enough rain fall to make it slightly more testing, it could be worth having UGO GREGORY onside. He has made the frame in eight of his 14 starts at Beverley, with two of his four victories at the track coming on soft ground. He has run well enough fresh in the past to think he can cope with his 224-day layoff and he was second over course and distance off 4lb higher as recently as September.

Leg 5: 3.50pm

Leg 5 Selections: (1) Blueflagflyinghigh

Below the top three in the handicap, this does not look a great contest. Consistent types in Ludo’s Landing and Order Of Malta could be decent Placepot plays, but BLUEFLAGFLYINGHIGH is the best treated if able to confirm his reappearance second at Ripon, when beaten just a head. He came forward for his first run after a break during his last season on turf, and would not have to have improved too much between three and four to land this.

Leg 6: 4.25pm

Leg 6 Selections: (6) Wannabeawallaby

Miss Gitana is an obvious type for Sir Mark Prescott, but her runner-up effort here last time was not franked by the third, Rogue King, when he competed next time out. As such, a chance is taken on bottomweight WANNABEAWALLABY, who did not show a lot in maiden and novice company, but made a relatively promising introduction to both turf and handicap company when fifth of 11 at Nottingham. The son of Australia did a lot wrong that day, but should improve for this step up in trip on pedigree; enough improvement can see him defy a lowly mark of 58.
