The leaders went off pretty hard in the 1m2f Chelmsford handicap won by The Night King on 29 November and it was fifth home KING OF THE SAND who caught the eye, doing best of those to chase the strong early pace on his all-weather debut.
The Gary Moore-trained three-year-old was well backed that night (9-2 from 7-1 on course) and was well clear of the other prominent racers, who dropped away to finish ninth, tenth and 11th of the 11 runners. He only lost out for third place in the last half a furlong and can be backed to make amends in the 1m3f 32Red Handicap at Kempton on Wednesday evening (6.15).
PIVOTAL FLAME could only finish a neck second when the 9-4 favourite for a 1m4f handicap at Lingfield last week but stall 10 was no help and he had no answer to the winner after a making an aggressive wide move two furlongs out. Trainer Pat Phelan remains in fantastic form – he had a 15-length newcomer score at 10-1 (from 14s) at Fontwell on Tuesday and had winners at 25-1 and 6-1 last week - and the drop to 1m2f won’t inconvenience Pivotal Flame when he returns to Lingfield for division two of the Betway Heed Your Hunch Handicap (2.40).
Pivotal Flame – Lingfield 2.40 (2pts win, 2-1 generally)
King Of The Sand – Kempton 6.15 (1pt each-way, 10-1 Betfair, Paddy Power)
