Andrew Mount provides his analysis and best bets for Day 1 of Royal Ascot
LE BRIVIDO hasn’t had things go his way in two starts for Aidan O’Brien – he was very slowly away when third in a Group 3 at Naas in April on his first run for 12 months and was on the receiving end of a draw and pace bias when fifth in the Lockinge at Newbury.
Progeny of Oasis Dream have a good record at Ascot and backing them blind on the Flat would have found 50 winners from 366 bets (13.7%) for a profit of £46.60 to a £1 level stake at SP. Concentrating only on colts and geldings would have increased the profit to £86.28, with those to start at 10-1 or shorter landing 34 of their 131 starts (26%) for a profit of £90.28.
WELL OF WISDOM, a qualifier on the above system, could provide a spot of value in the Coventry Stakes (3.05). Charlie Appleby’s colt impressed when coming from off the pace to score at Newmarket on his debut and he was knocked sideways when a close-up third at Newbury next time, going down by a short head and a nose in a Class 2 conditions contest.
MABS CROSS has proved incredibly consistent - recording form figures of 31111214332113 (7-14) since her racecourse debut - and she looks the each-way play in the King’s Stand Stakes (3.40). I advised her each-way when she was third in this race at 20-1 last year and there’s no doubting that she has improved subsequently, rounding off her 2018 campaign with victory in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp. She landed the Palace House Stakes on her return and reportedly lost a shoe when only third to Battaash in the Temple Stakes. The last-named can get worked up in the preliminaries and looks a poor-value favourite. Last year’s winner Blue Point, three from four here, looks the biggest danger.
OASIS CHARM, another son of Oasis Dream trained by Charlie Appleby, can surprise in the 1m2f Listed Wolferton Stakes (5.35). He raced choke-out when fifth of eight at Meydan last time and is best judged on his record in big fields (12 or more runners) of 1011 (3-4), improving to 111 (3-3) over 1m1f-1m2f only.
