Andrew Mount provides his analysis and best bets for Day 1 of the Newmarket July meeting
That Doncaster win took her record on officially ‘good to firm’ going, since qualified for handicaps, to 1121 (3-4), with the sole defeat by a neck behind Leodis Dream, rated 86 at the time but now running off a mark of 100.
I also want to side with Kevin Ryan’s RATHBONE (stall ten), whose trainer has gone close in this race in the last two years. Tommy Taylor was second by a head at 14-1 in 2017 and Stormbringer was second by a nose at 12-1 last year. Tommy Taylor ran in the same colours as Rathbone, as did Savalas who was a 16-1 fifth last year.
Rathbone has improved since gelded, landing fast-ground handicaps at Leicester and Pontefract before running eighth of 22 when poorly drawn in a hot York handicap. The return to a stiffer track will suit.
Mark Johnston-trained front-runners are often seen to good effect on the July Course and COMMUNIQUE is taken to cause an upset in the 1m4f Princess Of Wales’s Tattersalls Stakes (3.35). He trailed home last at Royal Ascot but this track will be kinder to his prominent running style and his record following an out-of-the-frame effort reads 51171 (3-5). His record across both Newmarket tracks is 111 (3-3) and Silvestre De Sousa is a good booking.
I want to save on DESERT ENCOUNTER in case they go too hard and set it up for the closers. Dropping back down to Group 2 company could see a revival from David Simcock’s veteran and, since gelded, his record below Group 1 level reads 311113212132133 (7-15).
MORDRED was only ninth of ten on the Rowley Mile on his penultimate start but still clocked a fast time and the race has thrown up several winners. He did fourth best of the far side bunch when mid-division at 100-1 in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot and looks over-priced in the concluding mile Joh Deere & Ben Burgess Handicap (5.10).
Princess Power – Newmarket 3.00 (1pt each-way, 14-1 BetVictor, five places, is the best offer. Skybet and Paddy Power are shorter but are paying six places)
Rathbone – Newmarket 3.00 (1pt each-way, 14-1 Skybet, Paddy Power, both paying six places)
Communique – Newmarket 3.35 (1pt win, 14-1 generally)
[Desert Encounter – Newmarket 3.35 (0.5pts win, 25-1 generally)
Mordred – Newmarket 5.10 (1pt each-way, 14-1 generally)
