Andrew Mount provides his analysis and best bets for Day 2 of the Newmarket July meeting
Mark Johnston has provided five of the last six winners of the opening 1m2f bet365 Handicap, at odds of 25-1, 12-1, 8-1, 8-1 and 13-2, and DARK VISION looks the most interesting of his three entries. He’s yet to match his juvenile form but showed more when eighth of 28 in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot, doing third best of those to race on the far side. The badly-berthed seventh and 14th have won since and there’s enough stamina on his dam’s side to risk a financial involvement on his first start beyond a mile.
Mark Johnston is also well represented in the 1m6f bet365 Trophy (3.00) in which KING’S ADVICE (stall three of 18) looks the pick of his three runners. He failed to make it seven straight wins for the yard when sixth of 19 in the Northumberland Plate last time but wasn’t beaten far from a very wide draw and will be happier back at this slightly shorter trip.

There’s no obvious pacesetter in the Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes (3.35), so it could be worth taking a chance on Roger Varian’s MOT JUSTE (stall three of six), who raced prominently when down the field in the 1000 Guineas last time. The smaller field and faster ground will suit.

Stablemate QABALA (stall one) was well beaten in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh but the leaders never came back on that pace-favouring track. Impressive on her comeback in the Nell Gwyn, she fared best of the closers when third in the 1000 Guineas and is worth a saver.
