Warfield Mares’ Hurdle Tips – Mullins Starlet To Dominate Ascot Grade 2

Willie Mullins heads to Ascot on Saturday looking to bag some notable scalps and whilst most eyes will be on Energumene’s clash with Jonbon in the Clarence House Chase, the Closutton handler will saddle the red-hot favourite Kargese in the Grade 2 Warfield Mares’ Hurdle. Second in the Triumph Hurdle last season, she is already fancied to be a leading player for the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in March and she looks the one to beat. Our tipster Steve Chambers previews the race here and finds it hard to look past the market leader.

KARGESE

(Paul Townend/Willie Mullins)

Four wins and four seconds in eight career starts just highlights the talent Kargese has and having finished second to Majborough in the Triumph Hurdle, she then followed that up with a second placed finish behind Sir Gino at Aintree a few weeks later. However, she finally got her name in lights at the Punchestown Festival, where she bagged a Grade 1 prize there and she could be an even more exciting prospect this term. Vying for favouritism with Brighterdaysahead and Lossiemouth for the 2025 Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, Kargese is sure to improve for this outing, but she is a proven class act and looks the one to beat.

TAKE NO CHANCES

(Kielan Woods/Dan Skelton)

An impressive 10-length winner of a Listed mares event at Wetherby back in November, Dan Skelton’s Take No Chances was then blown away in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle, where she could only finish fifth. Last seen finishing third in a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham last month, the seven-year-old will need to improve significantly on that effort, but she does have race fitness, so has to be capable of putting some pressure on Kargese here.

CASA NO MENTO

(Sam Twiston-Davies/Nigel Twiston-Davies)

The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Casa No Mento ended last season with a fine victory in a Listed mares novice hurdle at the Punchestown Festival, but she’s failed to kick on from that this campaign. Pulled up at Kempton on her first start this season, she was then sent over fences at Bangor last time out, but could only finish fourth of six. A return to hurdles should bring on some improvement, but she has to replicate last season’s form to stand any chance.

REST OF THE FIELD

Jonio & A J O’Neill’s All The Glory has finally found her form having been rated in the low 110s through the early part of her career. However, wins at Musselburgh and Southwell have shown significant progression and she will be bidding to land the hat-trick here. Ben Clarke’s Ooh Betty is another that has been in the form of her life and she has won two of her last three starts, which includes a handicap hurdle success at Kempton during their Christmas meeting. Nicky Henderson’s Pawapuri and Kim Bailey’s Brendas Asking complete the line, but they will need huge career bests to put any worry into the mind of hot favourite Kargese.

VERDICT

It may be her first start of the season, but KARGESE is undoubtedly the class act in this race and she could well propel to the head of the Mares’ Hurdle betting with a dominant win here. With top notch juvenile form from last season she can force Willie Mullins to send Lossiemouth to the Champion Hurdle, with her a lively player for the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham with a facile win here. Take No Chances and All The Glory can chase her home, but this could turn into a procession.
