York Dante Festival Day 2 Tips: Four Picks For Thursday’s Racing On The Knavesmire

There’s set to be a superb day’s racing at York on Thursday afternoon as day two of the Dante Festival will take place on the Knavesmire. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers has delved through the formbooks and picked out his four best bets for the day, as he expects a real Epsom Derby contender to emerge from the Dante Stakes…

2:15pm York – Lindum York Handicap

We kick off the day’s racing at York with a hugely competitive 5f sprint at 2:15pm and it’s a real tough betting heat for punters. Seven times course-and-distance winner Copper Knight was just touched off at Chester last week and has to be a leading contender, while Clarendon House and Korker are another brace of runners to watch at the head of the betting.

However, it’s David O’Meara’s ALLIGATOR ALLEY that can taste victory as he was a winner at Newcastle last August off a 2lbs higher mark and was second off that same mark of 91 on his last visit to York. Taking his chance here off 89, the seven-year-old failed to land a blow over 6f on the all-weather at Lingfield in March, but a return to the turf and dropping back to the minimum trip should see him hit the frame at the very least at double-figured odds.

2:45pm York – Oakmere Homes Hambleton Handicap

A fascinating 7f handicap comes up next and the one that catches the eye is the William Haggas-trained AL MUBHIR, who produced a fine comeback run at Leicester last month, where he finished second, and he can go one better on Thursday and record the victory. Upped 1lb for that run, the five-year-old is sure to improve for that outing, but has shaped like he could be a potential Listed or Group 3 performer and the son of Frankel can prevail here.

All three of his career wins have come in soft going, so any rain that hits York in the lead-up to the race is a huge positive, but he’s undoubtedly one of the class acts in the race and if everything goes his way then he can storm to glory.

3:45pm York – Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes

Charlie Appleby’s ANCIENT WISDOM can launch to the head of the Epsom Derby betting on Thursday as the three-year-old son of Dubawi can storm to Dante Stakes glory at 3:45pm. One of the key Derby trials, the Dante Stakes has been the stepping stone for many to go on and claim Classic glory and with the Derby betting wide open then the door is ajar for a colt to snatch favouritism from 2000 Guineas flop City Of Troy.

A superb winner of the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster at the back end of last season, the Godolphin raider is one that should improve for the step up in trip and he looks tailor-made for this 1m 2f test. The likes of Caviar Heights and Al Musmak look exciting talents, but Ancient Wisdom can prove far too good in this event.

5:20pm York – Collective Green Energy Handicap

Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore can end the day with a winner as they team up with the exciting LONDON CITY, who broke his maiden tag at the third time of asking in a Dundalk maiden last time out and he could be hugely progressive over middle distance trips this season. The Justify colt failed to sparkle over 7f and a mile in his two two-year-old runs, but a taking one-and-a-half length win at Dundalk on his first run this season over 1m 2f saw him improve.

He steps up again in trip for this event and the manner in which he was impressing in the closing stages of that Dundalk win suggest the further he goes the better he is. Stepping into the handicap sphere now he will need to show improvement, but a mark of 93 looks workable and he should have no issues defying top weight here.
