Form & Verdict

Non-runner in several key staying races when it's been fast ground this season; however, he ran away with this race last year and finished comfortably on top in the Goodwood Cup this July and 2m4f Prix du Cadran two weeks ago; while soft ground would seemingly be preferable, good to soft is probably okay; this is quite a quick return to action but he's the one to beat.

Goes very well in the mud; among his variety of big-race wins, this contest proved an excellent fit in the last three runnings (last two were on good to soft); had wind surgery after second start this season and his two runs since have been wins in the Doncaster Cup (seeing off Sweet William) and Prix du Cadran; still takes a strong hold and trying to hold him up proved a losing battle at Doncaster, before he dictated the pace in the Cadran; being able to dictate again can't be guaranteed but a fourth Long Distance Cup win may still be forthcoming.

Improvement almost every time this season and it's been on a major scale; graduated from good handicaps when fifth of nine in Group 2 at Longchamp (1m7f, very soft) two weeks ago, soon outpaced when the action began in earnest but rallying strongly at the finish; has more to offer as a stayer but he's taking on some of the very best in that division today.

Kept mostly to Listed/Group races for two years but he broke his long losing run in handicap at Chester (2m2f, soft) two weeks ago, wearing down Emiyn; 4lb penalty in this much more competitive race demands another step back up the ladder but the return to winning way still rates a positive, especially as it showed he can still grind out a good performance in the mud.

No win since July 2021; while still a smart stayer, as shown by his front-running third in C&D Group 3 (good to soft) two starts back, the combination of firmer ground and trip this short make this look a tough task.

The swashbuckling hero of three Gold Cups here and of so many other top-level staying races; however, he has contested the last four runnings of this prize and won in only 2018, and he's been well short of his best form this season, notwithstanding three wins; put in his place when second to Trueshan at Longchamp two weeks ago and whether less testing ground today can see him recapture past glories remains to be seen.

Effervescent and seemingly ever-present at or near the top of the staying division; that includes wins in this race in 2018, 2019 and 2021 and he's also won three Yorkshire Cups, which makes him unbeaten in his six races at York; while not quite the force of old these days, he still gave Gold Cup winner Kyprios a big fright in the Goodwood Cup last month, just ahead of Trueshan, and looks set to throw down another powerful late challenge.

Won two good 1m6f handicaps at York in 2019 (tremendously impressive on second occasion) and went down by a neck to Trueshan on final run that year; unlike that rival, hardly anything has been seen of him since but winning a 1m4f Group 3 on Kempton AW six weeks ago suggested he can reach new heights, including as 1m6f (unraced beyond that) seemed to suit him so well as 3yo.

Close third in 2m4f Gold Cup here in 2019 and went very close in that year's Melbourne Cup over 2m but not so good in the latter race last year and that's his entire record at 2m+; this step back up in trip needs a very positive response because he needs far better form than any he's produced in 2020 or 2021; came last in the Irish St Leger on latest outing.

Only the two wins in recent seasons, both at this venue, including this race last year, justifying favouritism; this looks a stronger edition, but he should be fully primed for a repeat bid with two runs under his belt; his liking for the track suggests he may reverse last month's Curragh form with Manu Et Corde; not much between them then.
