Form & Verdict

Best known for his high-class chasing exploits but he reminded us of his hurdling prowess when scoring for a ninth time in this discipline with a ready defeat of Silver Streak at Kempton; the favourite probably wasn't at his best but there's no knocking the performance and he's already won two good-ground renewals of this race (2016/2020); very solid.

Multiple winner down the years; turns 12 imminently and his two results this season, including behind Rubaud when bidding for a third success in Kempton Listed event in October, suggest he's perhaps finally on the wane; well held in this contest in 2022.

High-class hurdler/chaser who has been an excellent servant to connections over the years and is bidding to win this race for the third season running; seemed to race too freely in first-time cheekpieces (now removed) in Aintree Hurdle in April but faced a tough assignment there anyway and ought to be very hard to beat here.

Five-time hurdle winner who also pays his way on the Flat; however, no match for Sceau Royal on these terms at Kempton 20 days ago, as was also the case in this last year; a likeable type but the King horse clearly has his number.

Was looking hard to win with but kicked that theory into touch when arriving late to win the County Hurdle at Cheltenham and following up in the 2m Grade 1 novice at Aintree; the Galway Hurdle didn't go to plan but in another valuable handicap at Listowel he would have been placed at best had he not come down late on; now has to bounce back with probably career-high figures to prevail here.

Previously frustrating type improved enormously in the spring, winning County Hurdle and a Grade 1 novice at Aintree; not so good in Galway Hurdle (made mistake and saddle slipped); has to be a player.

Form & Verdict

Chasing aspirations aborted after an odds-on defeat at Sedgefield in May, since when he's had wind surgery; operated at the peak of his powers in some good handicap hurdles last season but this is a step up for him and he was well beaten in this two years ago.

Doesn't look as good as he was but extreme distances (3m7f/4m1f) were too far the last twice and he was a close third over 2m5f at Carlisle to kick off his season; has dropped to a good mark and this race could be a nice fit for him; should be fine on the ground and the return of cheekpieces is no bad thing.

Continues to drop down the weights and 4m1f on heavy ground proved too much in the Eider last time; in fair form previously this winter (2m5f/3m7f) but this 9yo is not the force of old and others are more compelling.

Not the force of old but edging down the weights and a respectable third on both starts this winter; the latest was over an extended 3m7f behind a runaway winner in the Edinburgh National at Musselburgh (only his second run beyond 2m5f) but he'll need a fair bit better to take this.

Form & Verdict

Irish raider for whom 2m on good ground is just about perfect, as he showed in posting career-best RPR of 152 in winning a Grade 3 at Tipperary in July; was always on the back foot after a slow start in the Galway Hurdle and ran well all things considered; has raced only 13 times in all (6-11 hurdling) and he warrants plenty of respect.

Put up a career best when runner-up in a Listed chase at Ballinrobe in May but blotted his copybook when refusing to race in a Grade 3 last time; new headgear combination now tried and while he's potentially risky, he also looks feasibly treated.

Off what's now a sky-high mark he ran an absolute cracker to be third in a hot 2m handicap chase at Cheltenham two weeks ago, so he remains in very good form; also has a solid profile over hurdles, but not at this level of competition.

Form & Verdict

After exploding onto the scene as a juvenile (should have won the Triumph by daylight), last season was an anti-climax, with his only salvation when romping home here in the Kingwell (heavy); proved unsteerable back left-handed at Cheltenham and then pulled too hard at Punchestown; if on his game he's well up to winning this; best days have been on soft/heavy but has Flat honours on good ground.

Notoriously quirky but is a talented hurdler when on song; nowhere near best in Graded contests this term and now gives chasing another shot; disappointing in both attempts over fences but this represents a big drop in class off a very attractive mark; good chance provided he's on a going day.

A prolific winner but rarely the easiest to predict; going right-handed suits him well (dual Ascot winner) but hasn't been at his best under either code of late and failed to uphold his good Sandown record when last of four in the recent Fighting Fifth (cheekpieces tried there soon removed); was in better form when dividing Paisley Park and Champ in the rearranged version of this 12 months ago (Kempton) on his only previous attempt at 3m.
