Form & Verdict

After hammering Politologue by 7l in Ascot's Grade 1 in January (2m1f, soft) he looked a big player in the Champion Chase only to be let down by his jumping; didn't run at all badly in the circumstances and had probably had enough for the season come Punchestown in April; this sort of trip is worth exploring but he's made his name on soft or heavy ground.

A longer trip may be preferable but he was a good second off this mark at Ascot (2m1f, soft) in November on his reappearance, and filled the same position at Chepstow (2m3f, soft) last time; also effective on good/good to soft; this highly admirable 12yo can give another good account.

Form & Verdict

Progressed in a big way last season, winning for a fourth time in six handicaps when making all at Ascot in March (2m1f, good) and then better again in chasing home Shishkin in the 2m Grade 1 at Aintree; dangerous to presume he was grossly flattered by his proximity to the Arkle winner and, still only a 6yo, he brings plenty of potential to the table over this longer trip; versatile tactically, which might be key here.

Outsider in this contest for the last two years, flattered when second in 2022 (race fell apart) and early faller in 2023; following Boothill's late fall, he inherited a remote second behind Edwardstone at Newbury last month when bidding for a third Game Spirit success; has the worst chance judged on this season's form.

Has failed to threaten in handicaps on his four runs this season but was also below his best last term prior to a major revival when winning this race for the second consecutive year; four visits to Newbury have yielded three C&D wins (including on soft) and no surprise if he's bang there.

Landed this prize in 2022 and also has two subsequent Grade 2 chase wins on his CV; on the downgrade now but last month's Cheltenham third (2m, soft) was very respectable and today's faster ground will suit.

Form & Verdict

Grade 2 winning novice but was beaten 15l by Allmankind in the Grade 1 on Sandown's Tingle Creek card 12 months ago and was flattered to finish ahead of the Skelton horse at Cheltenham in March; made the most of a good opportunity on his return at Exeter but only carried 10st 7lb in a handicap, so unwise to get too carried away by that.

Won a maiden hurdle on heavy; recorded his best ratings in 2022; began this campaign in respectable fashion but last two outings were poor, given wind surgery in between but a respiratory noise was reported on latest start; stays 3m2f but this trip is major unknown territory.

Has run at the last four Festivals, second in the Arkle in 2021 and third in the Ryanair in 2022; ran with credit when fourth in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury (3m2f, good to soft) in December but has his share of weight and he didn't run well off his lower hurdle mark in January; has had wind surgery since and cheekpieces return for the first time since last April.

Placed in valuable handicap chases on both outings this season, more recently when keeping-on fourth in Coral Gold Cup at Newbury (3m2f, goof to soft) last month; unraced over hurdles since March 2020 but could be very interesting trying to exploit his lower mark in this sphere.

Form & Verdict

Fell in three of his first four chases but he's a sound jumper in the main and high class on his day at this distance; was conceding 6lb to a rejuvenated Lostintranslation at Ascot the last time and that effort was bordering on his very best form; the only C&D winner in the field and commands the utmost respect.

Fell in three of his first four chases but he's a sound jumper in the main and high class on his day from 2m4f to 2m6f; his penultimate second at Ascot was up there with his best form but when below par at Huntingdon he was taken on up front and may face a similar scenario here; unraced on heavy but soft is fine.

Has been prone to jumping errors and fell a few times early in career but he's a smart chaser on his day and doesn't have much to find with Dashel Drasher on last season's Ascot Chase form; drop back to 2m5f should suit with reappearance (in 3m hurdle) under his belt.

Form & Verdict

Exuberant 5yo whose only defeat in six chase starts came when getting embroiled for early supremacy in the Arkle; that's always a concern when other front-runners are in opposition (as here) but he looked right on his game when conceding weight all round in what's turning out to be a hot renewal of Aintree's Old Roan (2m4f handicap); the one to beat.

Exuberant and very exciting novice chaser in 2020-21 season but the wheels have come off since his Grade 2 handicap win at Aintree (2m4f, good) last autumn; well beaten in Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon this month and comes here with some searching questions to answer.

Form & Verdict

Without a win in two years and after his early struggles last season over fences he ended up back over hurdles, winding up with a heavy defeat in one of the handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival; has a decent record when fresh but this is a big ask.

Without a win since November 2019; way short of that form last season, which ended with a heavy defeat at Cheltenham Festival on sole start in cheekpieces, and soon struggling in a Grade 2 chase on reappearance six weeks ago; he was up against it in the latter (80-1 over just 2m4f) and has a squeak on some hurdles form last term but others appeal more.
