Form & Verdict

Superb Australian 8yo who is the highest rated sprinter in the world, 3lb ahead of Golden Pal; eight Grade 1 wins at 5f-6f and is supremely adaptable regarding tactics, type of track and the going; hard to find a fault as this stiff 5f is likely to suit but has never raced outside Australia and that great champion Black Caviar left her best form Down Under when just scrambling home at this meeting; a massive player if he's on song.

Looked good when winning a 5f Newmarket handicap on reappearance and has shown better form in Group company since (all on good), albeit King's Lynn, who beat him at Haydock 24 days ago, is the more proven performer on this course; open to further improvement but has it to prove today.

Has a modest strike-rate for a horse of his ability but he wasn't beaten far in this race in 2022 and has finished second and fourth (Mitbaahy eighth) in the last two runnings of the Group 1 King's Stand at Royal Ascot (good to firm and good); soft ground went against him in this last May but every chance he'll go well this time given more suitable ground.

Runner-up in last season's King's Stand at Royal Ascot (5f, good to firm) and denied a clear run when creditable fourth in that same Group 1 last time (good); not ruled out each-way but this hold-up performer is clearly well suited by Ascot's stiff 5f and this speedier test may not be ideal.

Up-and-coming sprinter early last turf season and came through to take second here on final 2022 start; some doubts about that form behind the wide-margin winner and he's needed excuses for two minor runs this year (soft ground didn't suit on reappearance; scoped badly leading up to Haydock run) but it's too soon to be negative with his yard in its best form for years.

Runner-up in 5f Group 2s at Meydan for the last two years, to Equilateral in 2021 and Lazuli in February (both on good) but his biggest win came in Listed company in 2020 and he was a fading tenth in this race 12 months ago (22-1); no real claims.

Over three years since his last win; placed in Group 1 company over C&D last summer; bitterly disappointing this year, often finishing weakly, but he's plummeted down the weights and he now starts out for a new stable; carries obvious risk but it wouldn't be a bolt from the blue were he to win easily either.

Both wins at 7f, most recently in a Listed Newbury race in August 2020; promising first attempt over 5f when a staying-on third to Khaadem and Existent in a Group 3 at Newmarket in April (good) but lesser effort in France since and a mighty task awaits this time; first-time blinkers on.

Listed winner at 6f but is better at 5f and should have recorded a big career best in this race 12 months ago (good to firm) with a trouble-free run; just scraped home from Twilight Calls in a Group 2 at Haydock last month but a strongly run race back here will be just the ticket; a good contender among the home contingent.

Smart at 5f on AW for new yard and nearly snatched a Group 3 from Khaadem at Newmarket in April (5f, good); lesser effort behind King's Lynn at Haydock since and although in a normal year he would have a squeak at a price this is a particularly strong renewal.

The best sprinter in the US; lost out late in the Norfolk at this meeting in 2020 and was defeated for the only time since when having his sole off day at York last August; has taken form to new level on last two starts, out of the gates like a rocket when making all in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (5f, firm) and again on his return at Keeneland (about 5f, good); multiple Royal Ascot winning trainer Wesley Ward says he is the best he's brought to the meeting but does need to bring his home brilliance to Britain.

Everything fell right when given a tremendous hold-up ride by Jamie Spencer to win at 80-1 in the Group 1 Jubilee Stakes (6f, good to firm) at Royal Ascot in June; that may prove to be a one-off but he kept on for a fair seventh over York's speedy 5f in the Nunthorpe and he should get a suitably strong pace in this big field now back up in trip; not ruled out.

Given a tremendous hold-up ride to win the Group 1 Jubilee Stakes (6f, good to firm) at Royal Ascot which was the only time he's been ridden by today's jockey Jamie Spencer; won 5f Group 2 at Goodwood last July and good to soft ground probably wasn't ideal when fifth in the July Cup last time; however, whether Spencer will be able to repeat the Royal Ascot tactics successfully over this speedy 5f is questionable; fourth in this race last year.
