Form & Verdict

A battle-hardened old pro who has been paying his way under both codes for years and he was a clearcut winner of this 12 months ago (soft), beating Calling The Wind (now 3lb better off); this is far more suitable than the 1m4f Listed race he contested four weeks ago but, unlike last year, he's not the top-rated this time and he could do with the showers turning heavy.

Acts on soft, bit more to prove on heavy; two of the highlights in his long and admirable career were 2021 and 2022 wins in the 2m5f Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot; only seventh in that race this year and his powers are seemingly on the wane, so he will do very well to match last year's fourth in this event on the only other time he's worn either tongue-tie or blinkers, both of which now return.

Smart dual-purpose sort has won 11 races under all codes; has run mostly on the Flat in the last two years and ran a corker when second at Galway last week; couldn't handle testing ground at Auteuil when last seen over hurdles in November but this will suit better; the pick of Paul Townend.

Form & Verdict

Won last year's Chester Cup on good to soft ground but anything softer spells danger, as he showed when a disappointing favourite in this race 12 months ago; put up a decent defence of his Chester crown last month but that form would fall short of the requisite standard to win this and he was fit from hurdling, so it would be unwise to bank on any physical improvement.

Although beaten in the last two editions of this won by Stratum, he was under 2l away 12 months ago and drying ground will aid his cause no end; good and bad under both codes in the meantime but he's one who won't be fazed by this unique test.

Form & Verdict

Came of age last summer, finishing second in the 1m6f Queen's Vase here, then third in the Irish Derby and second in Grand Prix de Paris; has yet to recapture that form this season, though his close fourth in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes here (2m, good to firm) was a reminder of his potential as a stayer; brother to 2m winner Kew Gardens; goes on all ground.

Ran as well as he was entitled to in a 1m4f Listed race at Goodwood four weeks ago and that should have teed up nicely for this, in which he ran second to Stratum 12 months ago before going on to win a 2m4f handicap at Glorious Goodwood (good); perhaps vulnerable for win purposes once more, but he won't be a million miles away.

Represents a jumps-orientated yard but has raced only on the Flat; had a ball last year in progressing through the handicap ranks with four wins and his latest York second (2m; unraced beyond) is right up there with his best form; however, he has to rate a very unlikely winner on these demanding terms.

Races prominently; now a 6yo with 29 starts behind him but seems to have unearthed some improvement from somewhere, as it was career-best form in running away with a Newmarket 1m6f handicap (good) and he raised the bar again to finish second in the Group 3 Henry II Stakes at Sandown, which is a respected trial for the Gold Cup; he's evidently a better horse now than when a close fourth in this two years ago.
