Made a big splash in a few good 1m4f handicaps last two seasons, including on soft; tidy win last term at the York Ebor meeting; sold out of John Butler's for 150,000gns 11 days prior to a muted show in the November Handicap at Doncaster; even on best form, he has a lot to prove at this level.

Flourished when upped to 1m4f for last two starts last season, justifying favouritism in this race (soft; unraced on heavy) in clearcut style; resumed his improvement with a tidy win at York Ebor meeting (good) before put in his place when 33-1 in an Ascot Group 3; sold out of John Butler's for 150,000gns 11 days ago; still looked capable of better in that York win, so not dismissed despite 5lb higher mark.

Improved middle-distance handicapper in 2022, on turf and AW, including C&D; not picked up again this year and way below form at Ascot last time but at least he's 7lb lower than when reappearing in a valuable C&D handicap in April; not ruled out back on AW; regular tongue-tie discarded.

Improvement peaked with his win in this race last year (good to firm); just 1lb higher today and he was a respectable third on soft ground at Ripon on latest outing, with his tongue tied for the second time, so he needs a second look.

Won Class 2 events over 1m4f at Newmarket and Haydock last spring and he was a good fifth of 16 back at Newmarket (1m6f) in his final run last summer; now makes his AW debut after 241 days off but he has won when fresh in the past and needs watching in the market.

1m4f wins at Newmarket and Haydock in the spring; has since run well at Royal Ascot and the Newmarket July festival, meeting trouble in running in the latter but making late gains to show he stays 1m6f; very interesting to see what he can do with another attempt at the trip today.

His form figures over 1m5f read 172 and he was going beyond that trip for the first time when narrowly beating Aztec Empire to win at York (2m, good to firm) last month; may have more to offer over staying trips but he likes York and it remains to be seen if he'll reproduce that latest form here.

Rather mixed displays last term (well beaten twice over 1m6f at York) but had gelding and wind operations before justifying favouritism when he reappeared at Doncaster (1m4f) early last month; creditable eighth of 18 at Royal Ascot (1m4f) but still needs to prove himself at this trip.

Was a Flat winner over 1m2f on good ground for James Fanshawe in 2022; a solid effort on hurdling debut at Listowel and should have improved nicely from that, so looks a big player.

Verdict

This looks a good opportunity for FARHAN (nap) to add to his big-race wins in the November Handicap over C&D last season and at the York Ebor meeting last month. The manner of that latest success suggests that he is still going places. Contact is next on the list, on the strength of his admirable campaign this year, but Pride Of Priory might be capable of showing that his latest run did not reflect what he’s capable of. Aimeric, in just his second handicap, looks the most interesting option among the rest.[Richard Austen]
