Form & Verdict

A top stayer for the last three years, including with wins in this race in 2020 (soft) and 2021 (good to soft); produced an almighty performance in a handicap to take the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (AW) this June; third in the Goodwood Cup (good) was not far off his best turf form but losing out by a neck to Coltrane in the Doncaster Cup last time, hanging and wandering, was a backward step; the one to beat if he's back to his best.

Still takes a strong hold; among his many big-race wins are the 2020, 2021 and 2022 editions of the Long Distance Cup over C&D in October; ended 2023 with a disappointing show in the same race, followed by wind surgery; that seemed to turn him round after second start last term but conceding 7lb to all of this field may be tough.

Goes very well in the mud; among his variety of big-race wins, this contest proved an excellent fit in the last three runnings (last two were on good to soft); had wind surgery after second start this season and his two runs since have been wins in the Doncaster Cup (seeing off Sweet William) and Prix du Cadran; still takes a strong hold and trying to hold him up proved a losing battle at Doncaster, before he dictated the pace in the Cadran; being able to dictate again can't be guaranteed but a fourth Long Distance Cup win may still be forthcoming.

Form & Verdict

Below form sole run on soft; has really clicked this season with wins in a handicap at Royal Ascot (2m4f), Listed race at Sandown (2m; by 10l) and the Doncaster Cup (2m2f, good to soft); in the last-named he put his head down admirably to prevail in a very tight finish from below-form Trueshan; in the form of his life this year and has solid each-way claims.

One of the top British stayers in 2022 and 2023, during which many of his top performances were registered at this track; won this race last year; the big difference between this and previous campaigns is that this time he has been to Dubai and he ran poorly, which also followed two modest efforts (one here) to end 2023; cheekpieces are enlisted.

His only two runs on soft (unraced on heavy) were in 2020 and in the Doncaster Cup five weeks ago, below form in both; pipped by Trueshan in this race last year (good to soft) and in career-best form this season, showing it twice at this track and when winning at York on penultimate start; soft or heavy ground is the big worry.

His only run on soft was in 2020 (below form) but he held Trueshan off by a neck in this race last year on good to soft; the positions were reversed at Ascot last October but this 6yo has had much the better season this year with his two Group 1 placings and wins in a Group 3 and Group 2; looks set to go well again.

Form & Verdict

Unraced on softer than good; never dangerous at Royal Ascot or the Newmarket July festival but, with a hood enlisted, he then won at Glorious Goodwood and added a top handicap when he made most and rallied very well to oblige by a short head in the Ebor at York; both were 1m6f and, as a rather free-going sort, he's no certainty to stay 2m; needs further improvement.

Improved for staying trips and fitting of a hood last year, notably winning prestigious Ebor handicap at York and third in Group 2 Long Distance Cup at Ascot; disappointing in Saudi Arabia and Meydan in his two runs this spring but conditions should be ideal on this return to Britain and he has strong claims if he can get back near best after a break.

9yo who has run well at three Royal Ascots, notably with wins in the 2m5f Queen Alexandra in the last two seasons (on soft ground first occasion); that's not the quality of this contest, however, and his peak Flat ratings were in 2019 and 2020; tailed off in the Doncaster Cup on latest start and he's now tongue tied and blinkered, both for the first time.

Acts on soft, bit more to prove on heavy; two of the highlights in his long and admirable career were 2021 and 2022 wins in the 2m5f Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot; only seventh in that race this year and his powers are seemingly on the wane, so he will do very well to match last year's fourth in this event on the only other time he's worn either tongue-tie or blinkers, both of which now return.

Smart dual-purpose sort has won 11 races under all codes; has run mostly on the Flat in the last two years and ran a corker when second at Galway last week; couldn't handle testing ground at Auteuil when last seen over hurdles in November but this will suit better; the pick of Paul Townend.

Form & Verdict

Three wins from the front this May-August, notably a runaway success from Coltrane at York in August; second favourite for the Group 1 Cadran at Longchamp two weeks ago but headed after 3f, struggled a long way out and looked extremely leg-weary up the straight (on very soft but he's won on heavy here); major player on his best form but scale of that latest defeat has to be a major worry and he was below form twice in October last term.

A fine sight bowling along up front and he totally gave his rivals the slip when a runaway winner under Tom Marquand in the Goodwood Cup (good to soft) last August; used to go well in the mud over shorter distances in 2021, but has had two failures on it at Longchamp since; absent since another modest show at York last August; big shout if he's back on song for this.

A fine sight bowling along up front and he totally gave his rivals the slip when a runaway winner under Tom Marquand of this race last year (good) and the Goodwood Cup on latest start (good to soft); they were his career-best efforts but a 1m6f Listed win here in June came on good to firm; today's rivals, four of whom were in his wake at Goodwood, will be mindful not too give him too much rope but that's sometimes proved much easier said than done.

Can front-run; acts on soft; effective here, one of his peak efforts when close fourth in C&D Group 3 in April; not in the same form since, absent three months before he had a crack at the Irish Cesarewitch (handicap debut; 13th) three weeks ago; even his peak form requires marked improvement.

Last-gasp win in the Group 2 Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot (1m6f, good to firm) in June on third start; lost his unbeaten record in the 1m4f Grand Prix de Paris one month later but he was back with a bang five weeks ago when winning the St Leger at Doncaster (14.5f, good to soft); leaves the strong impression that moving up to 2m will suit, so further improvement is likely and that would give him a very big shout.
