Form & Verdict

Very smart performer at his best in France, such as when a close third of 19 in Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly last June (about 1m2f, soft); never reached those heights again, including in conditions races this year, but fascinating to see if the situation can be salvaged by new trainer William Haggas.

He's not the force of old (third in the French Derby in 2021) but, having dropped down the weights, he went close at Haydock (1m, heavy) a fortnight ago; testing ground may suit best but that's not guaranteed; a contender if backing up that latest performance.

Very smart as 3yo (third in French Derby); some initial promise for this yard but his recent efforts have been less encouraging, finishing sixth of eight over 1m2f at Newbury (heavy) last weekend.

Has continued on the upgrade this year, adding to four earlier wins with one at Ayr in September (1m2f, good; has won on heavy); didn't go down without a fight when seventh at York last month but she could be a shade vulnerable now.

Not at her very best on the Flat during light 2023 campaign but still showed considerable ability and this five-time winner (7f-1m2f, various ground) is entitled to respect on today's hurdle debut.

Handles good ground but has won both starts on soft and made all in good style in this last year; has question marks about his form this year but a 5lb higher mark than 12 months ago, back on soft for the first time since, should not be beyond him.

Sometimes front-runner; 317-day absence before this season, during which his second at Windsor and third at Newbury have been his best efforts, both over 1m2f on soft; upset in the stalls and withdrawn once in July; edging down the weights but may be vulnerable to an improver.

Sometimes front-runner; below form during a light 2022 campaign but returned from 317-day absence with second of seven at Windsor (1m2f, soft) in May; upset in the stalls and withdrawn on his next intended start, before a backward step when favourite in returning cheekpieces (absent since May 2021) eight weeks ago; none too solid.

No match for Dubai Souq when runner-up here 12 months ago (soft); has won on good to soft since but was well held back on soft 20 days ago and there's still a question as to whether testing ground is his best option.

Below par on stable debut over C&D (heavy) last October, after a break, and this 10yo has been absent since; however, this C&D winner is 1lb lower than when winning at Redcar (1m2f, soft) last April and is not ruled out.

Verdict

Considerable interest is added by the formerly very smart Millebosc trying to salvage his reputation on this first run for William Haggas. A market move either way should help assessments as he would be home and hosed on anything like his best form. Last year’s winner Dubai Souq is back on soft ground for the first time since but he was well below his best on good ground two starts ago and it’s not as if he can’t handle that surface if he’s on song. EETEE has come right into his own since upped to 1m2f and things didn’t go entirely his way at York recently, so he may well have some more to give.[Emily Weber]
