Has a mixed record this season but he returned to form with a rallying second in a big field on heavy ground at Newbury (1m4f; pulled clear of third) ten days ago; remains well treated on his Epsom win last autumn and he's respected back up in trip.

Had four runs for Sir Michael Stoute in May/June; showed clear promise with his third in a Salisbury maiden (1m4f) but he was disappointing on his handicap debut at Doncaster (14.5f, good to firm) last time; changed hands for 62,000gns but has something to prove on return for new yard and all of his runs have been on good/good to firm; has been gelded.

Well-bred filly who has finished placed over 1m4f in all of her three novice runs, most recently when runner-up behind an odds-on rival at Ripon in September; didn't look comfortable on that sharp track but she kept on well in the closing stages and is an interesting contender over this stiffer stamina test on her handicap debut.

Half-sister to three winners for the yard, notably Alyssa (1m6f, Group 2) and Albaflora; tonight's stiffer test looks much in her favour as she starts handicap life off a workable mark and she's strongly respected.

Underlined how well he goes in the mud with a 7l win at Thirsk (1m4f) last week and won by even further at Ripon (1m6f, heavy) on Thursday; effectively another 6lb higher if turned out again but it's offset by his rider's claim and he'll make a bold bid if coping with the quick turnaround.

Made a low-key start at Newbury (1m3f) in August and she's finished down the field again at Kempton (1m4f/1m3f) in both subsequent runs; beaten 14l last time but this is more realistic on handicap debut and she's a half-sister to a 1m6f winner; needs checking in market on this step up in trip.

Verdict

Last year’s runner-up Red Derek got back on the scoresheet with a brave win at Doncaster 11 days ago and he’s respected on this step back up in trip. Captain Haddock returned to form with a rallying second at Newbury and has claims if he can back that up, while Ralph Beckett’s handicap newcomer Allemande looks interesting on her switch to this stiffer stamina test. However, the vote goes to CLANSMAN (nap), who won in good style over 1m5f in the mud at Ayr last month.[David Moon]
