Form & Verdict

Has won three of his seven chases and he was sent off favourite for Warwick's ultra-competitive 3m5f Classic Chase last time and ran perfectly well to be fourth; coming back to 3m is probably a positive and the ceiling of his ability is still not known for sure.

Dour stayer who loves the mud; five chase wins include one here; reliable in these valuable staying chases without ever looking particularly well handicapped, and he was beaten 24l into fourth in this last year when 3lb lower; having another solid season but hard to believe he's any better now than 12 months ago; first-time tongue-tie.

Goes well on soft/heavy; his three chase wins have been at up to 3m2f and his well-held fourth in last season's Classic Chase (favourite) and Midlands National (4m2f, soft) both saw a dip in his form; there can't be much doubt that he'll stay, though, given the way he kept on strongly for third to Malina Girl over the extended 3m3f at Cheltenham on latest start; needs to improve but he's a strong each-way candidate.

Goes well on soft/heavy; won twice last season and resumed with a win at Carlisle (up 7lb since) one month ago, all at 3m to nearly 3m2f; fourth in last season's Classic Chase (3m5f, heavy) and Midlands National (4m2f, soft) both saw a dip in his form but this progressive 7yo will surely prove his stamina in due course and needs plenty of respect.

0-6 over fences but last season finished runner-up in a 2m4f Grade 1 and the Kim Muir at Cheltenham Muir (3m2f, soft); ran another sound race behind an unexposed chaser on his return (2m7f handicap) and commands considerable respect off the same mark provided conditions are deemed suitable, having missed engagements due to good ground in the past.

Still a maiden over fences (0-12) after a series of notable efforts, including when second of 11 at Doncaster (3m, good to soft; handles soft) in December; not at his best when sixth in the Great Yorkshire Chase there two weeks ago; type to bounce back quickly and unlikely to be far away.

Somehow remains a maiden over fences (0-11) after any number of notable efforts, including here last time when beating all bar Forward Plan; usually jumps well, so omitting ten of the 18 fences wasn't in his favour; deserves a break and the cheekpieces have to be worth a go.

Detached in last from the word go at Uttoxeter (3m, good to soft) in February but made late headway into third of 12; never quite landed a blow when creditable fourth at Ludlow (3m, good) latest but best efforts have been on soft and he has to be worth a first go at this sort of trip.

All four of his chase wins have come at Chepstow, producing a career-best performance there in October (2m7f, good) when donning first-time cheekpieces; however, he bled from the nose next time and didn't run any race in the Welsh National; now needs to steady the ship.

His two wins over regulation fences came in hunter chases about three years ago; confined to hurdling for his eight runs since returning to rules and he went close to defying this mark at Newbury in November (3m, good); lack of recent match-practice over fences could count against him.

Local yard won this two years ago; has to bounce back from a laboured run at Warwick (though Saturday's Cheltenham winner Cepage was only just ahead of him) but he's usually consistent once finding some form and he's run well here in the past; return to less-taxing conditions should also help; respected.

Won easily at Exeter and defied a 9lb rise in Market Rasen's Lincolnshire National (3m3f, again good to soft), readily going clear turning in but blundering at the last and doing well to prevail in the end; definitely better than the bare result and a 7lb rise should be manageable.
