Form & Verdict

This is his first run since December 2021 and he needs to prove how much ability he retains; however, he twice ran well for Sandy Thomson after some time off, and his new stable's horses often go well when fresh; on a handy mark and he's an interesting contender.

Started off for current stable with two seconds at Hexham (2m4f/1m7f) in the autumn but looked out of sorts in two Kelso races at end of last year and arrives here with questions to answer.

Runner-up on slow ground at Hexham on first two starts for new stable this season (2m4f/1m7f) and now 2lb lower; needs to bounce back from a below-par run behind Young Buster here a month ago but has run well here in the past and can't be ruled out.

Missed last year but has shown he retains much of his ability for his new trainer; the return to this much longer trip looks sure to suit and he's an interesting runner.

Form & Verdict

After making a promising start over fences his progress has stalled somewhat, but he hasn't run badly the last twice and this may prove to be a weak race; possible player.

Has come a fair way down the weights and the signs were a little more promising when beaten 12l at Carlisle last week (2m4f, heavy); still didn't really threaten from off the pace.

Fell on his chase debut at Ayr in January and his jumping wasn't perfect here (2m4f, good to soft) last month; however, there was still promise in that last-time-out fourth of 12 and he's respected today.

Has rediscovered some form on last two outings, more recently when clear second at Hexham (2m, heavy) last month, and remains well handicapped on past exploits but some of the others appeal more all the same.

Dual course winner (2m4f/2m); not firing on all cylinders this season but last month's Newcastle third (2m4f, heavy) was a big step back in the right direction and that form is working out well; sure to be suited by the return to this track and remains on a good mark; good chance.

Form & Verdict

Well beaten on last month's handicap hurdle debut at Ayr (2m, soft; 5-1) but he'd previously shown some promise on his first two starts (2m, soft/heavy) and his in-form trainer's horses frequently make better chasers than hurdlers; no surprise if he's an improver now switched to fences.

Won on his chase debut at Newcastle (2m, heavy) in March and bounced back from lesser run on final start for Lucinda Russell when scoring at Carlisle (2m, soft) last month on first outing for Jimmy Moffatt; this unexposed 6yo is open to further improvement and is firmly in calculations.

Down the field at Ayr (2m, good to soft) in April and sold out of Lucinda Russell's yard for £22,000 in May; however, two starts ago this very lightly raced 6yo won on his chase and handicap debut at Newcastle (2m, heavy) and his new trainer often does well with recruits from other yards.

Very lightly 6yo who improved upon his hurdle form to win on last month's handicap/chase debut at Newcastle (2m, heavy); tackles different ground today and he beat only three rivals last time, but it looked a solid little race and he's in excellent hands to continue to progress.

Form & Verdict

It's a concern he reportedly made a respiratory noise when tailed off on his handicap hurdle debut at Doncaster in January; however, he posted some encouraging novice hurdle performances previously and this lightly raced point/bumper winner could improve now sent chasing; one to consider.

Two-time hurdle winner whose mark continues to fall, but following a long absence he's struggled to get competitive this season on his first four chase starts; has to raise his game in a big way.

Won twice over fences last year (on good and soft) but below best when last seen in February; has run well over C&D and claims if first-time visor (replaces cheekpieces) perks him up.

Verdict

Having been a creditable fourth of 12 here last month on his second chase start, PADDY THE HORSE is taken to add to his two hurdle wins at Hexham last autumn. The very lightly raced chasing newcomer One Mill Harbour is feared most for Lucinda Russell, while point winner Macavity is another who could improve for the switch to fences. Overcourt and Grand Voyage shouldn’t be ruled out.[Ben Hutton]
