Form & Verdict

Won the 2m2f Cesarewitch Trial at Newmarket last September but he was then tailed off in his first Group-race assignment at Longchamp (1m7f, heavy); everything points towards limitations in this company.

Often apprentice ridden; Listed winner at Nottingham in April and very reliable in good handicaps, including with his fifth in the Chester Cup (2m2f, soft; career-best form) on latest outing and his third and fourth in the last two runnings of this race; 6lb higher than 12 months ago but in the thick of it again if his Chester Cup form is repeated.

Soundly beaten in Group races on two of his last three starts but very reliable in good handicaps and also bagged Listed honours at Nottingham in April; close third in this race last year off 8lb lower when Harry Davies claimed 7lb; probably vulnerable.

Form & Verdict

Right up there in the top tier of the staying division and especially when the mud is flying; made a successful return in this race last season en route to heroically defying top weight in the Northumberland Plate and he signed off with further Group-race honours on Champions Day at Ascot; likely to be extremely hard to beat under his optimum conditions.

Still takes a strong hold; among his many big-race wins are the 2020, 2021 and 2022 editions of the Long Distance Cup over C&D in October; ended 2023 with a disappointing show in the same race, followed by wind surgery; that seemed to turn him round after second start last term but conceding 7lb to all of this field may be tough.

Goes very well in the mud; among his variety of big-race wins, this contest proved an excellent fit in the last three runnings (last two were on good to soft); had wind surgery after second start this season and his two runs since have been wins in the Doncaster Cup (seeing off Sweet William) and Prix du Cadran; still takes a strong hold and trying to hold him up proved a losing battle at Doncaster, before he dictated the pace in the Cadran; being able to dictate again can't be guaranteed but a fourth Long Distance Cup win may still be forthcoming.

Form & Verdict

On similar terms he got to within 2l of Trueshan on Champions Day at Ascot in 2021; winless last season but ran some good races, notably finishing a 5l fifth in the Ascot Gold Cup; more likely to be placed in this than win, but should give backers a run for their money.

Kept mostly to Listed/Group races for two years but he broke his long losing run in handicap at Chester (2m2f, soft) two weeks ago, wearing down Emiyn; 4lb penalty in this much more competitive race demands another step back up the ladder but the return to winning way still rates a positive, especially as it showed he can still grind out a good performance in the mud.

No win since July 2021; while still a smart stayer, as shown by his front-running third in C&D Group 3 (good to soft) two starts back, the combination of firmer ground and trip this short make this look a tough task.

Posted career-best form when runner-up in a 1m6f Group 2 for fillies at Glorious Goodwood last summer before signing off with a poor one; has a decent record when fresh and she'll go on the ground, but looks outclassed.

Can make the running but below form when she tried it in French Listed race on latest outing, following a respectable reappearance; no ground worries but while peak efforts make this a competitive mark, she was below that level when sixth in 2m5f Queen Alexandra here last year on her only attempt at a marathon trip and is clearly held by Calling The Wind on that result.

Form & Verdict

Absent since 2021 when he was going great guns, following his second in the Grade 1 2m4f Aintree Hurdle with victories in the Cesarewitch and a Grade 2 hurdle at Ascot; remains to be seen if he's still at that level but, even then, he'll do well to beat the best of these.

Progressive last season, proving himself better than just a smart handicapper when pushing Abacadabras close in the 2m4f Grade 1 hurdle at Aintree in April (good to soft); produced his best Flat form to win the Cesarewitch in October and then followed up a 2m3f Grade 2 hurdle here (good) with plenty to spare; that latest form was franked last week at Cheltenham; should be hard to beat if staying 3m.

Upwardly mobile 7yo; having his first run on the Flat for over two years when winning the Cesarewitch in October in clearcut style; progressed at a rate of knots over hurdles last season, running a cracker when second in the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle (2m4f, good to soft) in April; has won here and handles good ground and soft; looks a very worthy favourite.

No win since handicap debut two years ago; solid runs this year include her fourth in the 2m5f Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot (good to firm) and third over 1m6f at Goodwood (soft) last time, but career best is needed.

Has won on soft; absent since finishing midfield in the 2m4f handicap at Glorious Goodwood; some creditable efforts otherwise this term, including in York Group 3 and the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot; on a ten-race losing sequence and doesn't seem the easiest to place but has possibilities dropped back in trip/grade.
