Form & Verdict

Races prominently and can make the running; can battle too, as he showed when taking care of Indestructible in the Acomb at York and the Champagne on soft ground at Doncaster, before holding on by a head from Royal Scotsman in the Group 1 Dewhurst here on good (unraced on firmer); mishap leaving the stalls at Newbury two weeks ago prevented any assessment of his progress from two to three, but he was one of the top 2yos and may well stay 1m.

Front-runner/races prominently; acts on soft; flopped in the Prix Jean Prat when last seen, when the race possibly came too soon after his second to Paddington at Royal Ascot; progressive otherwise and may bounce back but he won a substandard edition of the 2,000 Guineas, with the form having largely worked out disappointingly.

Form & Verdict

Pretty useful form on debut (good to firm) and comfortably justified evens favouritism in a novice race at Ayr (1m, good) in September; made a small advance on that form when fourth of nine in a good conditions stakes here (7f, soft) on reappearance, and can build on that, but that record leaves him miles adrift of what others in this line-up have achieved.

Unraced on firmer than good except on debut; 125-1 second here (soft) last May in the 2,000 Guineas and respectable third in the Irish version (good); failed to back up that form in two top races at Deauville and ended 2023 tailing off at 100-1 in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in October; had wind surgery in January; major player if he can recover his Guineas form.

6f Goodwood wins on good to soft and good to firm, latter the Group 2 Richmond in July; form dipped in the Gimcrack but he saved his best for last as a 2yo when coming from off the pace in Group 1 Dewhurst here (7f, good) and getting to Chaldean all the time but beaten a head; on that evidence he does not have that much to find on form and is well worth a go at 1m.

Kept up a high level of form last year, winning the Richmond Stakes and getting within a head of Chaldean in the Dewhurst; was too keen in the 2,000 Guineas on his reappearance yet did not really get going until inside the last when a closing third between Hi Royal and Galeron; decent chance of getting his head in front here with that under his belt.

Won a maiden on good to firm last June and took home a huge prize in sales race at the Curragh (7f, soft) in September; has stamina on the dam's side and can improve upon his respectable show at Newcastle (1m, AW) on reappearance, but Flight Plan had his measure that day; stiff task.

Ran in the Guineas, the Irish Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes in May/June, finishing last of nine in last-named; fared a bit better when third of seven to Epictetus in C&D Group 3 three weeks ago but he'll need blinkers to have a positive effect if he's to turn the tables on that rival.

Progressive as 2yo, usually front-running; close second of four in the Group 2 Royal Lodge over C&D (good) on penultimate start and, after others had gone past him over 4f out, he rallied his way to a narrow Group 1 win at Saint-Cloud (1m2f, heavy) in October; needs further improvement and the drop back in trip has to be a worry.

Won the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud (1m2f, heavy) last October and his staying-on fifth in the 2,000 Guineas (1m, soft) suggested he could be a fine middle-distance prospect; better could have been expected in the Derby (1m4f, good to firm), when only ninth, but not every horse takes to Epsom and he retains potential; won on fast ground last summer; not written off.

Unraced on softer than good; last season saw him win at Ascot in May, Newmarket (good to firm) in July and York in August; the last leg of that unbeaten campaign was the Group 2 Gimcrack in which he did plenty wrong (raced freely in rear, hung left in the closing stages) but still finished firmly in charge; he looks all class, but his pedigree (dam won her races at 6f, granddam at 5f) and never having gone beyond 6f leave a significant question over his stamina.

Midfield (below par) in the 2,000 Guineas on sole run this season, appearing to confirm that he's a Commonwealth Cup prospect as opposed to a potential miler; very promising 6f colt (on good/firmer) last term, recording form figures of 211 that culminated in an impressive performance in the Mill Reef at Newbury; retains major potential and looks an exciting contender back down in trip; judged on 2yo evidence, he could easily develop into a top performer at this distance.

Unraced on firmer than good; progressed well over 6f as 2yo, ending with a French Group 2 win; brother to smart Wings Of War, who's spent virtually all of his career at 6f, and although this one stuck to his task very well over 7f on soft at Newbury two weeks ago, he was no match for the winner who is heading for the French Guineas, so this race looks a tall order.

First foal of connections' triple Group 1 winner Rhododendron (second in 1,000 Guineas and Oaks); unlucky second on good on debut (unraced on firmer); asked serious questions during his three subsequent races and kept answering them, showing great improvement in the process and registering his most authoritative success in the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster (1m, heavy; held up, settled much better than time before) on final start; looks sure to stay further and will probably be suited by it, but he's one of the proven class performers in this line-up and should have a big shout.

Superbly bred colt who had excuses for his flop in the 2,000 Guineas; bounced back in a massive way to land the Derby at Epsom (1m4f, good to firm) where he collared King Of Steel towards the finish, then followed up in the Irish version (good) where he wasn't exactly impressive but the race didn't pan out perfectly and he perhaps hit the front sooner than ideal; won major 2yo contests on soft/heavy but trainer has expressed concerns about returning him to such conditions; ground aside, he's a leading 3yo who should have even more to offer over this distance and has the right credentials for this prize.

Close second in 1m AW Listed race on reappearance and back on the up when runner-up in another Listed event at Pontefract (1m, good to soft) four weeks ago; has a bit more on his plate at this slightly higher level.

Won Newcastle novice (7f, AW) last November and reappeared with close Listed second there (1m, AW); down the field on soft ground in the 2,000 Guineas but he was prominent long way when beaten just over 3l in the Jersey at Royal Ascot (7f, good to firm); something to prove on this ground but a strong suspicion remains that he can still step up to play a leading role at this level at some stage this season.

Form & Verdict

Won the last four of his five races as 2yo; 5f Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot (good to firm; earlier won on yielding to soft) emphasises his speed but he scored easily over about 6f on next two starts and drawing 7l clear late on in Group 1 at the Curragh (on good; made most) in August was the top-rated performance by a European juvenile last season; returned a little sore and therefore missed an attempt at 7f in the National Stakes and was not seen again; plenty of stamina on the dam's side, which still leaves settling him as a possible issue but the Guineas must be attempted for one so talented who has a chance of staying.

Crowned the European champion 2yo last term; it's still not totally clear that he has fully trained on, having taken advantage of a near-side track bias at Haydock (won Group 2) in May then failed to justify favouritism (beaten just over 1l by Shaquille) in the Commonwealth Cup, but those bare performances still represent smart form; brilliant in Curragh Group 1 last August and that power-packed display is not yet forgotten.

Had a few excuses for his 2,000 Guineas flop; star performer over sprint distances otherwise and subsequently justified favouritism in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock (6f, good to firm; beat Shouldvebeenaring) where he gained an advantage by racing near the stands' rail but won well enough to think he retains plenty of his juvenile talent; crowned last year's European champion 2yo having been so impressive in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on good ground, and that brilliant success represents the best form in this field; won the Windsor Castle here 12 months ago; has to be greatly feared.

Carried all before him as a 2yo, signing off with convincing 7l success in Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh (6f, good; made virtually all); returned sore and wasn't seen again until the 2,000 Guineas when he pulled hard and folded tamely, finishing lame; today's drop back down in distance seems an obvious move, and he's the one to beat if back to his best, but there must be a question mark after such a poor run just three weeks ago.
