Form & Verdict

The third highest-rated 2yo in Europe last year after a terrific performance in the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster; favourite for the 2,000 Guineas on reappearance but showed no sparkle and looked a tired horse in the closing stages; completely transformed at Epsom and very hard to fault; no obvious reason why he should fail to uphold form with White Birch, Sprewell and the also-rans.

Superbly bred colt who had excuses for his flop in the 2,000 Guineas; bounced back in a massive way to land the Derby at Epsom (1m4f, good to firm) where he collared King Of Steel towards the finish, then followed up in the Irish version (good) where he wasn't exactly impressive but the race didn't pan out perfectly and he perhaps hit the front sooner than ideal; won major 2yo contests on soft/heavy but trainer has expressed concerns about returning him to such conditions; ground aside, he's a leading 3yo who should have even more to offer over this distance and has the right credentials for this prize.

Started the season with a low-key Naas win before beating Up And Under and Proud And Regal in commanding fashion in the 1m2f Derby Trial at Leopardstown; ground was very testing then, but he handled quick going effectively when a creditable fourth in the Derby; met some trouble in running and did not look suited by the track, so his performance can be upgraded.

Dundalk maiden winner last October; looked progressive when finishing strongly to beat Up And Under on reappearance in the Ballysax Stakes and confirmed that profile when challenging late to take second behind The Foxes in the Dante at York; came from a long way back to finish third in the Derby; capable of making a race of it with Auguste Rodin at this track.

Out of an Irish Oaks runner-up; failed to win in two starts at two; emphatic Dundalk AW winner in March; backed that up with Listed success in the Dee Stakes over an extended 1m2f at Chester; did not seem the handle the track at Epsom, worthy of another shot at 1m4f.

Derby and King Edward VII entry; dam second in Irish Oaks; two soft-ground maidens last October; further improvement when winning a 14-runner maiden at Dundalk (10.5f, AW) six weeks ago, leading well over 1f out and galloping nearly 4l clear; well off the best form in this field but he looks sure to make further progress and his yard has a superlative record in this race.
