Form & Verdict

Impressed on hurdling debut at Worcester (2m4f, soft) last October and was very creditable third in Grade 1 Challow at Newbury (2m4f, soft) on next outing; last season fizzled out afterwards but there's every chance he'll get back on track over fences this term.

Absent since running an inexplicably bad race at Kempton on Boxing Day (2m4f, good; 7-2); that was only his third run over fences and he merely had to be pushed out to win comfortably over this far on the Old course here the time before (good; off 7lb lower); placed in a Grade 1 novice as a hurdler and could be better handicapped than a lot of these.

Can lead; usually highly tried after impressive 2m4f hurdle debut win on soft last autumn; took a crashing fall on chase debut in October but no adverse effects three weeks later at Cheltenham (2m4f, good) where he had the race in safe keeping from some way out; up 8lb but future looks bright.

Impressed on hurdling debut at Worcester (2m4f, soft) last October and was creditable third in Grade 1 Challow at Newbury (2m4f, soft) just after Christmas; lost his way afterwards and fell on recent seasonal/chase debut but still has plenty of time to get career back on track.

Form & Verdict

Placed in two Irish points in early 2022 and immediately showed useful form over hurdles last season, winning twice; very close second off today's mark on handicap debut here (2m4f, good to soft) in April and looks a very good chasing prospect for the season ahead.

Two wins towards the end of last year from first three hurdle starts (2m/2m4f, good to soft) and went very close on handicap debut at Perth (2m4f, good to soft) in April when last seen; Lucinda Russell excels with chasers and this soft-ground point runner-up could improve now tackling fences.

Highly tried the last twice in Grade 2s and kept digging to finish third at Kelso (2m2f, good to soft) most recently and that's strong form, with the front two not disgraced in the Grade 1 Tolworth earlier this season and the fourth winning a Grade 1 novice chase at Punchestown on Tuesday; looks well handicapped and returning to this longer trip is very much in his favour.

Form & Verdict

Fortunate to open chasing account at Wexford (2m, good to yielding) in June but has made the frame in two competitive handicap since (2m1f/2m2f); seems versatile regarding ground and his proven ability over fences is a big selling point.

Has enjoyed a good season in handicaps at around this trip, winning at Wexford, Galway and Naas; has found things too demanding since Naas success in January, but now back on a mark that gives him a fair chance.

Gained third win over fences at Naas in January; struggled with his jumping a little behind Mister Policeman latest and possibly on a stiff enough mark for now.

Form & Verdict

Good third in Downpatrick chase (2m2f, good) last month and hurdle runs on next two starts were perfectly respectable; however, soundly beaten over C&D yesterday despite market support and 16lb out of the weights today.

Verdict

Pats Choice has plenty of experience over fences and ought to act as a good benchmark but the two chasing debutants at the top of the racecard were useful novice hurdlers last season and switch to this code with considerable potential. SNAKE ROLL seems lucky to have escaped a nudge up the weights for his very close second here in April and is given the verdict. Idalko Bihoue lost his way after the turn of the year but will be hard to beat if somewhere close to form of his Grade 1 third in December.[Chris Wilson]
