Limited in Ireland and was bought for only £6,500; beaten 13l and 19l in two handicaps for this yard, the latest when a weakener last week at Exeter; others appeal more.

Ex-Irish; seemed to appreciate the better ground when winning over hurdles at Newcastle in December (2m1f, good); last of three in a Fakenham novice handicap on chase debut last month (2m, soft); needs to improve on that; today's forecast ground not ideal.

Bumper winner who hasn't progressed over hurdles, with his keen-going tendencies a drawback; had wind surgery since unseating on handicap debut latest when held at the time; reservations.

Has a tendency to race too freely but improved to win at Huntingdon (2m, good to soft) a fortnight ago, his second handicap; recent 3lb rise does not look excessive and he's open to further progress.

Raced far too freely and was seemingly on the retreat before unseating rider at third-last flight on handicap debut; had wind op last month and remains unexposed, but needs to learn to settle.

Quite high mileage on the Flat with a strike-rate of 4-35; has had a good year in that scene (at about 1m2f) and could make a jumper.

Just one win from his first 28 starts but he's won three of his last seven and went close in his bid for a double at Chelmsford (1m2f, AW) last time; this return to Tapeta is no problem and he remains feasibly treated on his best form; respected.

Form & Verdict

Had some notable Flat form in Germany, holding his own in Group races this year; changed hands for 62,000euros; came up short when well backed for hurdling debut at Sedgefield (2m1f, good; first-time hood); that wasn't a strong race but neither is this; rain won't harm.

Won a point bumper in March; no match for a comfortable winner on his hurdling debut at Bangor (2m, soft) but faces nothing of that one's calibre here; respected.

Travelled strongly before asserting at Lingfield (2m, heavy) last month, his second handicap, and was not discredited when turned over at short odds by all-the-way winner at Huntingdon (2m, soft) a fortnight ago; still has potential and remains of strong interest.

Verdict

It’s worth giving another chance to WESTERN SOLDIER despite him coming up short in an ordinary maiden at Sedgefield. His notable Flat form suggests he should do better and rain is welcomed. Wise Guy ran okay at Bangor and he’s second choice ahead of hurdling debutant Sun Festival.[Alistair Jones]
