Novice hurdling campaign ended in solid fashion, winning in good style at Lingfield and Market Rasen then creditable third at Ayr (2m4f); may well progress further and do well in handicaps this term; one to consider.

Has his off-days but he's usually reliable around here and found just one too good over hurdles on his latest visit; could go well off his lower chase mark on just his third run over fences, having been a flattering second in his final one.

Won on the Flat at Pontefract in April and followed up over this C&D (good to soft) in May; has won here four times but the return to Market Rasen needs to trigger a major turnaround as he's been struggling for form.

Chasing didn't go to plan last season and he was a mid-race faller when returned to hurdling in the spring but his reappearance second at Wincanton (2m4f, soft) in November was very encouraging and his current mark ought to be workable; shortlisted.

Hurdle and chase successes on ground ranging from good to soft; winner of one course start, over fences in 2020, and well handicapped on much of his form at about 2m4f; some way off his best on last two starts, though, and blinkers worn once last winter weren't much help.

Six rules wins divided between hurdles and fences; back hurdling the last twice, not beaten far when third of six at Doncaster (2m3f, good) and heavy ground was an excuse last time (has won on soft); very well handicapped on some of his form.

Encouraging that he won on his reappearance last season (2m3f, good to soft; 6lb lower) and showed comparable form afterwards on a couple of occasions; gelded in the spring; might well improve some more.

Two wins (2m4f/2m3f, good to soft/soft) from last three starts, with good fourth in hot novice handicap at Cheltenham in between; did it comfortably at Catterick latest despite final-fence blunder; unexposed over fences and could have more to offer in this sphere; key player up 7lb for last time.

Delivered on earlier chasing promise when eased-down winner at Doncaster in December and his subsequent fourth in a hot race at Cheltenham (also 2m4f, good to soft) was very respectable; back in calmer waters today; good chance.

Looks progressive, winning with plenty to spare at Doncaster last month (2m4f, good to soft) on second chase run; needs to prove his mettle against other up-and-coming rivals but his northern yard doesn't venture here often now and is 3-9 with chasers on this track in the last five seasons.

He's well handicapped judged on his form towards the end of 2022 but struggled on both outings this season and a major turnaround is needed in a first-time visor (replacing blinkers).

Won two in a row in December 2022 and back on the scoresheet on his reappearance at Wincanton (2m4f, good to soft) in January, when clear with the runner-up; hit with 8lb rise but that win came in a big field and this 6yo has a progressive profile; firmly in calculations.

Verdict

This looks tricky. Call Of The Wind (second choice) has a decent record when fresh and enters the reckoning for all that last season didn’t finish too well, while Hourvari was a progressive novice and Prairie Wolf has the benefit of a run. However, ROCKY MAN won first time back last season and there’s every chance that he might improve again this campaign after a gelding operation.[Alistair Jones]
