Delivered with a well-timed challenge to win major 3m2f handicap at Newbury (good to soft) eight weeks ago, proving suited by the new trip and taking chase record to 3-10; generally progressive and is unexposed beyond 2m4f; possibilities.

Unraced beyond an extended 2m4f and this is a tough race in which to test his stamina; however, he was strong at the finish when winning a Grade 2 novice at Ayr (2m4f, good) in April and may well have staying potential; might have needed his reappearance in the Old Roan and is not ruled out.

High-class chaser at 2m4f-3m in his prime but he took a terrible fall at Wetherby two years ago and hasn't been the same since; easily excused a pulled-up run over hurdles in November and it's just possible he didn't act on the track when back over fences at Chepstow since, but the fitting of cheekpieces adds to the doubts.

The Old Roan at Aintree two weeks ago was always going to be tough and, at odds of 22-1, he never threatened; hard to fault otherwise this summer (from 2m4f to 2m7f) but this test of stamina on softish ground might be too much.

Cracking progress this term, producing form figures of 11121, most recently scoring by 12l at Worcester (2m7f, good); ran well in 2m5f Summer Plate the time before; possibilities, the way he's going.

Grade 2 winner over hurdles/fences in his younger days but career got interrupted by a mammoth absence; 0-7 for current yard and it's hard to envisage him winning this hot contest aged ten, despite having course form (runner-up in lower grade over 2m4f here in October).

Smart in 2019 (acted on heavy going) before a long absence; way below that standard nowadays, nevertheless taking second of 16 in a 2m4f handicap hurdle at Cheltenham in October but he's not quite matched that since in two chases or a handicap hurdle; others preferred.

Back from yet another absence to finish second of 16 in a 2m4f handicap hurdle at Cheltenham in October, since when he's come up short in two handicap chases (2m4f/3m1f); he's not without a squeak on that comeback effort and Dylan Johnston's 7lb claim is something for nothing.

Reportedly bled when a disappointing favourite in Wetherby's Rowland Meyrick Chase on Boxing Day and has since had wind surgery (tongue-tie also now added); best known for his chasing exploits these days and now having first run over hurdles (1-5) in nearly three years; nothing wrong with his mark but others are perhaps safer propositions.

Raced mainly at shorter; came up short in 3m1f contests at major spring festivals but Newbury reappearance (2m4f, good to soft) suggests he's well worth another crack at this sort of distance; has performed well (won/second) in two starts at Wetherby; possibilities off workable mark.

Verdict

A good-quality handicap. Datsalrightgino goes on soft ground but he’d probably prefer it faster and he skipped a rain-hit Chepstow last week. While SHAN BLUE (nap) has to prove that he’s the force of old, this class act commands the utmost respect at this level. Karl Philippe will be glad to see the back of some very strong big-field handicaps and he’s second choice.[Alistair Jones]
