Without a win since January 2021 and he hasn't really been threatening this winter, especially so at Doncaster most recently when the first beaten (3m, soft); wouldn't be the percentage call.

Now three years since he last got his head in front and consistency is not his forte; beaten 19l at Newbury last time and others are safer propositions.

Has won both his chases for this yard, though was helped by a collapsing pace at Huntingdon (2m7f, good to soft) and it was hard work to follow up at Newbury (3m2f, soft; following a wind op); at least encouraging that the front two pulled clear last time and he could prove himself worthy of this 7lb higher mark.

0-3 over fences when with Nicky Henderson; opened his chase account at Huntingdon (2m7f, good to soft) two months ago on debut for new stable, coming home strongly and shaping as if he'll be suited by this longer distance; had wind surgery (his second) since; open to further progress and warrants respect up 8lb.

Front-runner who won two in a row (2m3f/2m5f) in first part of 2023; returned to form when third of five at Uttoxeter (2m4f, heavy) in December and 3m probably stretched his stamina here last time; definite possibilities now back down in distance.

Well treated on last season's best form for Neil Mulholland; things are likely to click again at some point and he's one to watch in the betting, but he's yet to shine this term and a revival is very much needed.

Well below best this autumn on first two starts for new yard but he's well treated on last season's best form for Neil Mulholland and things are likely to click again at some point; one to watch in the betting.

Made all in February and May 2021 but he's run just four times since and achieved very little; tongue-tie and cheekpieces are removed; down the weights but there's a lot to take on trust.

0-12 but some fair efforts switched to fences this season, most recently 9l third when dropped to 2m at Ffos Las (heavy); another 2lb lower today and could be involved.

Dual 2m chase winner in the autumn (good to soft/soft) and kept on well from a long way off the pace to press Prince Quali in closing stages over C&D (heavy) in February; also ran well in valuable novices' handicap at Sandown (2m4f, good to soft) last month and has a fighting chance today, despite being 3lb out of the weights.

Winless in a brief hurdle career but this is his game and he's won 2m4f handicap chases this season at Warwick (soft) and Kempton (good to soft) with a close second at Plumpton in between; his last win six weeks ago was in just a five-runner race and he's 9lb higher today but he bounded 14l clear from after two out and looked one to follow.

Winless in a brief hurdle career but this is his game and he made an immediate impact on the switch to fences with a clear Warwick win (2m4f, soft); found only a fellow improver marginally too good at Plumpton since (2m3f, good to soft; third has won since); up 3lb but a likely type for yard that won this in 2020.

Verdict

Having been set some pretty tough assignments towards the end of last season SHANTY ALLEY returned to form with a good second behind a revitalised course specialist at Uttoxeter in May. He’s still on a good mark and might be the answer. Eaton Collina ended last season in very good form but resumes on a fairly tough mark and a bigger threat to the selection may come from chasing debutant Pepe Le Moko.[Chris Wilson]
