Form & Verdict

Useful juvenile hurdler last season and won three in a row when returned to the Flat in June/July; clear second to very progressive rival over C&D (good) when back over hurdles this month and will be fine on today's slower ground; major player.

Won at Plumpton (2m, soft) in March and, after failing to threaten in the County Hurdle, he was a fair second back at Plumpton last time (2m, good); however, there's a suspicion this will be too competitive.

Had this season's consistency rewarded with a 2l Class 3 success on soft here this month before predictably struggling when 28-1 for the County Hurdle; off his current mark he could be vulnerable to others better in.

Some solid runs in defeat this season before winning six-runner Class 3 handicap at Plumpton (2m, soft) 11 days ago; carries a 5lb penalty in this much hotter race but he did very well to finish fifth of 21 in the Fred Winter at last season's Festival (2m, soft), as his jockey reported his saddle slipped early and he was bumped after two out; could go well at a big price.

Made quiet start to British hurdling career last season but struck form towards end of that campaign, most notably when winning at Exeter (2m2f, good to soft) in March; has fitness to prove after seven-month absence but is open to further progress this term.

Had crept up the weights and was found out in a competitive handicap at Ascot last time (2m3f, good to soft); however, he won't mind returning to softer conditions and first-time cheekpieces might trigger something.

Likeable 6yo whose Exeter win (2m2f, soft) in December was his fourth over hurdles from 11 attempts; followed that with a good second at Sandown (2m4f, soft) four weeks ago; likely to give his running once more but he's creeping up the weights and this is much the most competitive field he's faced.

Probably needed his comeback third here and then won with a bit up his sleeve at Exeter (2m2f, soft), for which a 4lb rise is fair; that's two wins in three runs and he's beginning to click.

Had long career on the Flat before starting off over hurdles with three consecutive wins this summer (2m-2m1f); had excuse when pulled up in competitive series final this month (never travelling after mid-race jumping error) and remains one to be interested in.

Started off for Amy Murphy with three hurdle wins last summer and, following a five-month break, kept on well for close third in tactical race at Nottingham (2m, soft) on Flat return a fortnight ago; remains very well handicapped on older Flat form; high on the list.

High Flat mileage before embarking on hurdling career this summer; won his first three (2m-2m1f; including handicap off just 2lb lower) but he's run flat the last twice and there are stamina worries over this far.

Dual hurdle winner at about 2m3f on slow ground; got off the mark over fences at the sixth attempt when scoring over C&D (soft) on his penultimate start; things seemed to happen a bit too quickly for him when dropped to 2m1f (good) at Plumpton latest; not written off.

This trip could be on the short side but it was a likeable display when getting off the mark over fences at Huntingdon (2m4f, soft; fine on drier ground) and, overall, he probably has the least to prove here even off a 7lb higher mark.

0-5 over fences but headgear seems to have helped on last two outings, and the form of last month's Fakenham second (2m5f, soft; first-time blinkers) was well advertised by the winner in a valuable race at the weekend; has cheekpieces refitted today; course winner over hurdles; high on the list.

Revitalised by switch to current stable last season, winning three times (twice here); not seen since slightly disappointing run in May and current mark probably demands a career best, but he's versatile regarding ground.

Failed to beat a rival on his chase debut here last month but he's a four-time hurdle winner who went close here (2m4f, good to soft) on his return in November; looks interesting on that form but he's untried beyond 2m4f and this is a new challenge back over hurdles; mixed messages.

Verdict

There could still be a lot more to come from dual course winner Kansas Du Berlais, who will find this race much easier than his handicap debut in April, but MR FREEDOM ran well in defeat over C&D this month and might have a fitness edge today. Issam is next on the list.[Chris Wilson]
