No doubting his ability and he was well clear when falling in the Charlie Hall at this meeting two years ago; has only been seen three times since and wellbeing a concern after being pulled up here last Christmas.

In the process of registering a big career best when he fell in Grade 2 chase at Wetherby (3m, good to soft) in October 2021; has run only three times since and pulled up when favourite back at Wetherby last Christmas on latest start; has big-race entries over fences next month but there are questions to answer on this first hurdles run since March 2020.

Three wins in the 2021/2 season but found life quite tough in good races last term; has dropped to a fair mark and chance might depend on whether wind surgery can bring about a return to his best; testing ground fine.

Smart novice when holding his own at the highest level but has found it tough since, with his laboured third in this race setting the tone for last season bar one good run at Wetherby; 5lb out of the handicap today but on the plus side he's running off 4lb lower than 12 months ago (good ground against him) and is well treated on his best efforts; commands respect after a wind operation.

Has found it tough since running so well in top novice company last season and has little margin for error off this high a mark; still merits consideration with his undoubted class and his penultimate effort was okay.

Fair effort at Sandown when last seen in March and had previously taken his record at this track to 4-5 with a C&D win in January; hasn't shone on seasonal returns in recent seasons but hard to ignore.

Third in a strong 2m4f handicap at Sandown on final run and he's never won going that way round (six wins on left-handed tracks); looked good when he did win last season and returns on a competitive mark; fine on most ground and from 2m to 2m4f.

Bounced back quickly from a poor run in the Castleford at Wetherby over Christmas when taking his record at that West Yorkshire venue to 4-5 in a 19.5f handicap (soft) 44 days ago; ought to remain competitive up 5lb but his six wins have come at left-handed tracks (0-4 right handed).

Rather frustrating in recent campaigns, often shaping as if the step up to this trip would suit but not benefiting from it at Cheltenham in March; has won on heavy and has also dropped to a tempting mark, while trainer got off the mark for the autumn this week; possibilities if it all clicks.

Pretty consistent at about 2m, albeit with last win in January 2022 (heavy); has sometimes shaped as if he would be suited by 2m4f but he weakened right out of contention when trying it at the Cheltenham Festival (14-1) in March when last seen; that leaves him with a big question to answer, despite his good mark and his stable being in good form.

Won at Wetherby (2m5f/3m, good/soft) on final two starts last season and very close fourth in blanket finish on reappearance at Ayr (2m4f, good to soft) three weeks ago, when not helped by a mistake at the final fence; this unexposed 7yo could appreciate the step up in trip and is a key player.

Untested over a staying trip under rules but he won at stiff Carlisle (2m4f, heavy) in March and kept on well when second at Ayr (2m4f, good to soft) in April; there's some stamina in his pedigree and this trip is worth a go; could improve for fair reappearance fifth at Ayr and he's not ruled out.

Verdict

All of these are returning from a break and a few have tended to need a run previously. Dubai Days has a live chance off his current mark while the pair at the head of the weights could yet come good again. It looked as though the trip was to blame when GLOIRE D’ATHON blew out at Market Rasen and this progressive performer could well bounce back. Course specialist No Risk Des Flos rates the main threat.[Jonathan Neesom]
