Form & Verdict

Reappearance defeat was over hurdles and he bled when pulled up in his final chase of last season; useful when on his game as he showed when making all to beat the classy Tommy's Oscar off this mark in a three-runner race at Carlisle in March (heavy); hard to leave out of calculations.

Mixed hurdling with chasing last season, winning in both disciplines at Fontwell (2m1f/2m3f; good); returns with plenty in his favour and this mark shouldn't be beyond him; had wind surgery; sported cheekpieces the last twice.

Has run here just the once and it was a win, over hurdles in 2021; 1-4 over fences last term and ran well (after wind surgery) back over hurdles on reappearance this season, before a heavy defeat in hot race last month; back chasing today, probably in need of a career best.

Ran respectably at Exeter on seasonal debut; disputing third place when final-flight faller in this race in 2022 but folded tamely in it last year; more exposed than many of these rivals.

Form & Verdict

The form of his latest second at Wetherby now makes for particularly good reading and he's only 1lb higher; that was over 1m7f but has won over this far and he was backed into favouritism when unseating early last week at Catterick; chance.

Reverted to hurdles (from fences) in the winter and won two in a row at Doncaster (2m/2m3f, good to soft/good), racing prominently under Charlie Maggs in both; up in the weights and has a tougher assignment here, but he's clearly in fine form and could go well once more.

Record of 2-5 over fences and he might well have beaten Whodini last time at Ayr (2m4f, good to soft) had he jumped straighter in the closing stages; strong contender off just 1lb higher.

Yet to win a handicap and last two wins came in hunter chases; appreciated the drop back to Class 3 level when not far away at Market Rasen two months ago (2m5f, good) but will need a bit more here off just 1lb lower.

Form & Verdict

Received a good tactical ride when doing it easily at Huntingdon (2m4f, good) but had nothing to spare when prevailing in a blanket finish at Ayr (beat Vintage Fizz; good to soft); however, consequently went up only 2lb and he's evidently on the top of his game.

Verdict

Vintage Fizz may well reverse Ayr placings with Whodini but there are others to worry about in a tight handicap. GEROMINO unseated early last week at Catterick and it was no surprise to see him sent off favourite there given how his previous Wetherby run has worked out. Quinta Do Mar (second choice) has a lot in his favour and is unlikely to be exposed on the fitness front.[Alistair Jones]
