Not at his best over hurdles/fences last season for David Pipe; however, has had wind surgery since and he showed useful bumper form earlier in his career; could give a good account now back in this sphere on his stable debut (remains in same ownership).

Had wind surgery last August and is 3-3 for his new yard since; edged it in a fine duel over 3m2f at Carlisle on first occasion, followed by two wins at about 3m and he drew 11l clear from four out when a heavily backed favourite at Musselburgh on latest; all those were on good to soft but he did well on soft to heavy in Ireland early in career; up another 11lb and markedly in trip too, but he's a rising force and may well have more in the tank.

Sprinted well clear of the others with a well-handicapped rival at Market Rasen (3m, good to soft) last month and is now 2-2 for Brian Ellison; latest 4lb rise does not look excessive and he can complete the hat-trick.

Point/hurdles/bumper winner who got off the mark over fences on stable debut at Carlisle last time (3m2f, good to soft; first run after wind surgery); stiffer task off this 5lb higher mark and this is a very different track, but worth considering.

Runner-up in sole bumper in 2020 and he's since evolved into a highly talented hurdler and chaser; good second over fences at Huntingdon four weeks ago and he's a major player today.

Won at Cheltenham in December 2022 by 7l off 2lb lower but, following a good second over fences, he was pulled up in the same race this season; that was on soft and he does have something to prove on soft and heavy.

Won this race last year by 7l off 3lb lower; second over fences at Huntingdon last month showed his wellbeing; firmly in calculations but he does have more to prove if the ground is worse than good to soft.

Two-time Flat winner (latest in June 2022) who scored twice over fences this June; however, those were modest races and he's struggled subsequently; others preferred.

Inconsistent in recent years but won two chases on good ground in early part of this season and ran big race from the front when clear second at Fakenham (2m, soft) 11 days ago; no surprise if he gives this a good shot.

Made all for a C&D win last June (good) when 4lb lower; similar tactics were employed when he backed that up with a Stratford win (2m1f, good) next time; handicapper has had his measure since but he returned to better form when second over hurdles here (2m, soft) latest; player.

Two-time Tapeta winner elsewhere, in a Newcastle bumper in February 2021 and a Wolverhampton Flat maiden in December 2022; that's the positive, but his current form is a concern regarding today's claims.

Dual purpose performer whose sole hurdles success came here (2m1f, soft) in October 2021; has been seen more often on the Flat during the past year and his recent return to hurdles/fences hasn't worked out; best watched for now.

11yo who isn't the force of old but he showed as recently as February, when third in a valuable handicap chase at Leopardstown, that he retains considerable spark; won his sole bumper in 2016 and could go well.

Continues to drop down the weights and he was a fair second of four at Aintree (2m4f, soft) on Boxing Day; however, this 12yo has a patchy profile nowadays and was pulled up over this C&D (heavy) last time out.

Third in this last year off a 6lb higher mark, and is effectively running off that mark here from 6lb out of the handicap; second in a four-runner contest at Aintree over Christmas but much more needed here.

Verdict

The Nicky Henderson-trained CAPTAIN MORGS is a useful hurdler and chaser, and having shown promise in 2020 on his sole bumper run, he earns the vote. The 11yo Top Ville Ben isn’t as good as he was but may give the selection most to think about, while Anglers Crag won a bumper earlier in his career.[Ben Hutton]
