Wide-margin winner of a Ballyvodock maiden for Denis Murphy in January 2022; setback prevented him from running last season; looked in good shape when making a winning hurdling debut at Fairyhouse in November; failed to quicken when third behind two Gordon Elliott-trained runners in the Royal Bond, but that form stands up to scrutiny; trip should suit.

Good novice, winning a Fairyhouse maiden hurdle and a close third in the Grade 1 Royal Bond at Fairyhouse; probably failed to stay in the Grade 1 at Naas last month; interesting in his first handicap.

Point winner in May 2022; runner-up in a Fairyhouse bumper later that year; not disgraced in mid-division in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham; made all under today's rider to beat modest opposition readily in a maiden hurdle at Clonmel a month ago; unexposed but Ile Atlantique looks like the stable's best hope.

Point winner; runner-up in a bumper when turned over at odds on but wasn't disgraced in the Champion Bumper when last seen; 267-day absence no major concern for one from this yard and plenty of stamina on the dam's side of his pedigree, suggesting this step up in trip may suit.

Point winner on second of two starts in 2022; beaten favourite on his racecourse debut in a Kilbeggan bumper last May; has taken well to hurdling; easy winner of a 2m maiden at Clonmel despite showing a tendency to jump left; well suited by the step up to 2m4f when landing Grade 3 event at Navan; Firefox is the trainer's number one.

Has some smart form to his name including a win over Ile Atlantique in a bumper here in April (form boosted) and didn't need to improve to gain a third win in a Down Royal bumper last month; will be in the mix.

Ran once in France; beat the top-class Feronily in a bumper on debut for this yard; runner-up in two winners' bumpers; in front of Caldwell Potter (already a Grade 1 winner as novice hurdler) at Naas last February; beaten 3/4l by Firefox at Fairyhouse in April; impressed with wide margin maiden win at Gowran in November; heads a strong squad for the champion trainer.

Runner-up on first three starts before a creditable fourth in Champion Bumper at Cheltenham; below-par at Punchestown in April; had to work harder than might have been expected to land the odds on hurdling debut in a 2m7f maiden at Thurles; jumping none too fluent when second to a stablemate of An Tobar in 2m4f Grade 2 event at Navan.

Authorized 5yo related to some decent types and out of a half-sister to smart jumpers Kazal and Quito De La Roque; point-to-point second (soft) looked an exciting sort in winning both bumpers in May for top yard at Ballinrobe and Tipperary; potentially high-class novice hurdler and should be hard to beat.

Verdict

Based on the last nine editions of this race, the score reads Willie Mullins 5, Gordon Elliott 4. The two stables supply all but one of the eight runners. Despite the champion trainer’s numerical edge FIREFOX (nap) can take this for Elliott by upholding last season’s bumper form with Ile Atlantique. An Tobar, third behind an Elliott-trained pair in the Royal Bond, could be a strong force at this trip. Mystical Power should not be dismissed lightly. [Alan Sweetman]
