Won over hurdles here last February and got off the mark over fences over C&D (soft) in December; followed up over C&D (good to soft) last month; also effective on heavy; up 8lb for last time but had plenty in hand from Hurricance Highway and this front-runner holds strong claims once more.

Front-runner; acts on heavy ground; best form this term when solid second off this mark, behind subsequent winners, at Fontwell and Catterick in February; disappointing last time but may rebound in new headgear.

Returned to form with C&D (heavy) second in first-time cheekpieces last month and also ran well when second to a subsequent winner in first-time blinkers (retained) at Catterick (3m1f, soft) a fortnight later; respected.

Should be well handicapped and in the new cheekpieces (regularly wears tongue-tie) he gave it a bold go from the front at Fontwell (3m2f, heavy); that was better and likely contender if taking to the new blinkers.

Two good runs last winter, following a long absence, and he's well handicapped on that form; however, he's been well below his best on both outings this season and a major turnaround is needed now in cheekpieces.

Won two in a row (good/heavy) prior to finishing second in this last year (good to soft); he's 5lb lower than 12 months ago and is one to watch in the betting, but this 11yo has been tailed off/pulled up on his two runs this season and a major turnaround is required.

Back-to-back wins at Ffos Las (3m, good) and Taunton (2m7f, heavy) last March and only 3lb higher than for the latest of those; however, he's an 11yo now and his reappearance was underwhelming even if that was over 2m4f.

Verdict

Pimlico Point ran well in defeat over C&D on his chasing debut in November and is an obvious one for the shortlist but the answer might be HERMES DU GOUET, who shaped as though he might have needed his run over 2m3f here in November, and could have significant untapped potential over 3m. Raddon Top is back on the same mark as when winning this race a year ago, while Top Of The Bill was a wide-margin C&D winner 19 days ago and also features prominently in calculations.[Chris Wilson]
