2-5 at Ascot; mostly disappointing in his nine runs this year, including twice at this track, and his best run in that period came when runner-up over 3m2f in May; wore cheekpieces on last four starts; 12lb higher this time last year but a revival is needed.

Won two in a row in December 2022 and back on the scoresheet on his reappearance at Wincanton (2m4f, good to soft) in January, when clear with the runner-up; hit with 8lb rise but that win came in a big field and this 6yo has a progressive profile; firmly in calculations.

Went up 6lb for a narrow defeat over 2m5f at Hereford (good) in November and that rise, combined with the step up to 3m1f, found him out when 12l away back there last month; however, has been placed in all his handicaps and he's unlikely to be far away.

Got up on the line at Catterick (2m3f, soft) four weeks ago, completing a hat-trick and taking record in handicaps to 3-4; improving hurdler who is on a roll and has to be feared despite another rise in the weights.

Won at Lingfield (2m3f, good to soft) in November on second handicap start and again had something to spare when following up at Fontwell (2m5f, heavy); progressive and could take latest 5lb rise in his stride.

Verdict

There are clear positives about the whole field but Irish challenger JUST THREE, who is relatively unexposed on his handicap debut, may be the best way to go following stiff tasks on his last two outings. Herakles Westwood, on a hat-trick, is second on the list but there’s a niggling doubt over his step back down in trip. Bertie Wooster might be ideally suited by this sort of trip.[Richard Austen]
