Listed bumper winner on soft ground; 2-2 over hurdles since, cosily defying penalty in 14-runner race at Taunton (2m, good to soft) in December; remains unexposed and well worth his place in this higher grade.

Good third in similar event at Doncaster (2m, good) four weeks ago, taking hurdles form figures to 113, and ties in closely with Lump Sum on that effort; acts on soft; major contender.

Won a Listed bumper (on soft) before coming up well short at the spring festivals; the form of his debut hurdle win at Hereford (through the second) gives him the beating of Lump Sum and the front two came clear when he followed up in gritty fashion at Taunton (2m, good to soft); entered in the Supreme.

Bought for 210,000euros after winning an Irish point; unseated rider early on hurdling debut at Ffos Las but quickly made amends in 18-runner maiden at Newbury (2m, soft; 9-1) eight days later, storming clear on the run-in; useful prospect; commands major respect.

Bought for 210,000euros after winning sole Irish maiden point and not his fault he unseated early on hurdle debut (badly hampered); won with plenty in hand in big field at Newbury (2m, soft) next time and he's a highly likeable prospect; respected under penalty.

Bought for 210,000euros soon after winning Irish point debut on yielding ground in April; 15-2 with tongue tied, held up but badly hampered and unseated early in maiden hurdle at Ffos Las (2m, heavy) eight days ago; needs a second look.

Off the mark over hurdles (after three third places) in 14-runner maiden at Ayr (2m, heavy) 18 days ago; may not have reached his ceiling just yet, but this is a much stronger race and he'll need a personal best.

Showed ability in bumpers without winning; all three hurdle starts have come at Ayr over 2m and got off the mark on latest when a comfortable winner (hvy); a repeat of that will see him involved and will be suited by plenty of rain.

Third in a hot Punchestown maiden (2m3f, yielding) on hurdle debut in November 2022 and also on consecutive C&D starts towards end of last year; not yet tested on heavy ground but today's race looks easier than his latest and he ought to play a leading role.

Promising type, the winner of three of his four races; made it 2-2 over hurdles when easily landing the odds at Wincanton (1m7f, heavy; won bumper on good to soft) in December; hard to pin down but has to be taken seriously.

Point (soft) and bumper (good) winner who made it 3-3 when cosily winning maiden hurdle at Sandown (2m, soft) in November; 4l down when unseating rider two out in Grade 2 novice there (2m4f, heavy; 11-8 favourite) the following month; on a retrieval mission here; remains open to improvement.

Won point (soft), bumper (good) and soft-ground maiden hurdle here in November, all of them with a nice bit in hand; sent off 11-8, he looked in a spot of bother when unseating two out in Grade 2 back at Sandown last month and it could be that heavy ground was troubling him; evidently held in high regard by top team and remains exciting.

Best of four point runs came when winning on last of them; made all in 13-runner maiden at Taunton (2m, soft; 7-1; jumped right) on hurdling debut 12 days ago; up steeply in grade and plenty of improvement required.

Benefited from front-running tactics when winning an Irish point and similar tactics worked a treat when never headed on hurdle debut at Taunton (2m, soft); that wasn't a strong race but this isn't either so has a good chance of defying the penalty.

Half-brother to 2m hurdle winner Cotton Jenny; dam 2m chase winner, sister to 2m chase/2m4f hurdle winner Captain Dash; has run in four Irish points, putting up an improved show when making all in early December; hard to know what that form amounts to but he goes hurdling at a realistic level.

Gradually going the right way over hurdles and he quickened smartly to defy a penalty at Newcastle (2m1f, good) just before Christmas; this is tougher but he hasn't been extended for his two wins and must not be underestimated.

Well behind El Elefante in one of his bumpers but it's been all very comfortable in winning novices at Musselburgh (2m4f, soft) and Newcastle (2m1f, good), impressing in how he regained his composure after a bad late mistake last time when penalised; not to be underestimated.

Verdict

A fascinating Grade 2, all seven runners successful on their last completed outing. It’s not difficult to make a case for Fiercely Proud (second choice) or Lump Sum, both unbeaten over hurdles, but preference is for THE KALOOKI KID, an upwardly mobile type who could spring something of a surprise. Southoftheborder, favourite when unseating his rider two out in a similar event at Sandown last time, is another to consider.[Richard O’Brien]
