Form & Verdict

Veteran who won at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival and produced a career-best effort when staying on remorselessly to score by 13l over the big Aintree fences (3m2f, heavy) in December; subsequent defeat in Welsh National is not viewed harshly but he may find others better handicapped here.

Ridden last two years by Lucy Turner; won at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival and, after a patchy campaign last term, never better than first two starts this season, latterly when winning by 13l over the big Aintree fences (3m2f, heavy); first race beyond that was the Welsh National, just 18 days later which might help to explain his modest show but he also made mistakes early on final circuit; 7lb higher than at Aintree and needs another career best.

Back in peak form when winning by 16l under very patient Elizabeth Gale ride at Aintree (3m1f, good to soft) in October and also ran well when fourth behind Chambard over the big fences there in December (albeit tired and well held in the end); respected.

Not getting any younger but proved he retains significant ability when creditable fourth in Veterans' Final at Warwick (3m, soft) on last month's seasonal debut; 2lb lower here and ought to cope well with the heavy ground; must be considered.

Well handicapped on some of last season's form and was a very creditable fourth in Veterans' Final at Warwick (3m, soft) on last month's reappearance; will cope if the ground becomes very testing here; big player.

Returning from a similar absence (and wind surgery) when dominant from the front over C&D (soft) 14 months ago when only 2lb lower, after which he finished second in the final of this race at Sandown; fortunes went into reverse soon after but he's back from further wind surgery and handicapped to run a blinder if again on good terms with himself.

Form & Verdict

Very promising novice hurdler in 2011-22 (including on heavy ground) but lightly raced and very disappointing since small-field win on chasing debut in November 2022; Dan Skelton may yet coax him back to form but others in this line-up have considerably less to prove; cheekpieces removed after one use.

Just the seven starts for this 8yo; finished fourth in the 2022 Albert Bartlett and looked very promising when beating the useful Beauport on his chase debut, since when it's all gone pear-shaped; ran a laboured race back from wind surgery at Newton Abbot only three weeks ago; cheekpieces are turned to.

Tailed off on final run for Gordon Elliott in December 2022 and struggled on both starts for Gary Hanmer early last year but last month's stable debut was a step back in the right direction; needs to build on that performance today but will be suited by the trip/ground and has become well handicapped.

Won Clonmel hurdle in first-time blinkers for Gordon Elliott in December 2022 (3m, soft/heavy); mainly disappointing since, though fair stable debut in a 2m7f handicap chase at Kelso (soft) after a break last month.

Useful in his prime but tailed off on final run for Gordon Elliott in December 2022 and struggled on his two starts for Gary Hanmer early last year; plenty to prove now starting out for another new yard.

Form & Verdict

Dual hurdle winner (once on heavy ground) but came to grief in very early stages of two of his four chasing attempts and was well beaten when completing the other two races (albeit one was a Grade 2); still unexposed over 3m but needs to get his act together over fences.

Came to grief in three of his five races over fences, but he'd just taken the lead at Exeter (3m, heavy) 13 days ago when falling three out; judged on that, he needs considering on this return to hurdling.

Predictably found a Grade 2 novice chase far too hot last month but opened account over fences at Ffos Las (2m3f, heavy) two starts ago and could still have untapped potential over 3m.

Three wins over hurdles in Ireland last season (up to 2m5f) and he shot back to form when taking a six-runner novice handicap chase at Ffos Las (2m3f, heavy) in December on third start for this stable; however, not proven over this sort of trip and pulled up when out of his depth trying 3m in a Grade 2 novice chase on latest outing; needs a career best.

Verdict

Thorough stayer RAMSES DE TEILLEE (nap) ran well for a long way when fourth in last month’s Veterans’ Final at Warwick and is selected to dominate this less-competitive event from the front. Celebre D’Allen finished 38l behind Chambard in a gruelling stamina test over Aintree’s big fences in December but he still ran well there and can turn the tables on his old rival in what ought to be a more conventional race here. Floueur arrested his decline with a fairly encouraging seasonal/stable debut last month and also has possibilities.[Chris Wilson]
