How to Read a Racecard?
There is plenty of crucial information on our racecards, which can help you make better-informed decisions when picking which horse to back and hopefully give you more winners!
Number – The runners will be sorted by number on the far left of the racecard. These numbers will be displayed on the horse’s saddle cloth during the race. In flat racing, there will also be a number in brackets, which will show which stall number the horse has been drawn in.
Silks – These are the colours the jockey will be wearing and will be displayed next to the cloth number. The colours of the silks are the choice of the horses owner, and if he has more than one horse in the race they will wear the same coloured silks but will have different coloured caps.
Jockey (J) – This will be display which jockey is riding the horse.
Trainer (T) – This will tell you who the horse is trained by. If the horse is trained overseas, the trainer’s nationality will be in brackets.
Form – This will show you how the horse has been performing lately, usually showing their last five results. The way to read the form is left to right, and the number shows what position the horse finished. For example, if the form says 32121, then the horse finished third, second, first, second, first (most recent), in that order. If a horse has a zero in it’s form, that means that horse finished outside of the top nine in that race. There is also often letters displayed in the form, which mean as follows: P = Pulled Up, F = Fell, UR = Unseated Rider, BD – Brought Down, R = Refused to race. A hyphen (-) indicates when a horse starts a new season, and a forward slash (/) indicates two seasons have passed since the previous race.
Age + Sex – This shows you how old the horse is and what the sex of the horse is. There are different terms used for a horse’s sex, depending on their age and gender. A male horse under five years old is called a colt, a male horse five or older is simply called a horse, but if they have been castrated they are called a gelding. Female horses under five years old are called fillies, and when they turn five they are called mares.
Weight (W) – This will display the weight the horse will carry. It is displayed as: Stone-Pound (for example, a horse that carries 10 stone 2 pounds will show as 10st 2lb). The weight the horse carries is made up of the jockey’s weight, plus any additional weight in their saddlebags.
Official Rating (OR) – This is the official handicap mark a horse is given. The handicap mark determines how much weight a horse has to carry.
Form + Verdict – This includes a brief verdict on the horse’s chances, which includes how our editors believe the horse will perform. There is also further insight into the horses recent form, which includes a brief verdict on how the horse performed that race.

A former racecourse bookmaker, Andrew is well known for his trends systems and his in-depth knowledge of the sport has seen him win the Scoop6 multiple times. Dave Young
Dave (AKA Cheltmental) is a self-confessed Cheltenham fanatic, who has made plenty of profit over the years through his expert analysis of racing.
