Gambling Regulation in Ireland
The regulatory landscape for gambling in Ireland is slightly different than it is in the UK, and up until 2022 – when the new Gambling Regulation Bill was passed – there were fewer limitations on betting in Ireland than those that are imposed across the Irish Sea. However, this is all set to change in 2024 thanks to the Gambling Regulation Act, which will mark the establishment of Ireland’s new regulatory body, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, or the GRAI.
The GRAI will be responsible for the licensing and regulation of all gambling operators in Ireland, and will look to limit the threat of problem gambling by imposing stricter legislation on bonus advertisement, mandatory access to responsible gambling tools, and by establishing a Social Impact Fund that will be used to raise awareness and provide help to those affected by gambling addiction.
These are all extremely positive steps for Irish gambling, but it is important to note that the bill is yet to come into effect. Parliament is still ironing out the details when it comes to regulating the advertisement of free bets and other gambling bonuses, which feature heavily in the UK, much to the detriment of efforts to limit problem gambling.
Here at GG, we will be sure to keep you updated on any developments regarding Ireland’s new gambling regulations, and how these might affect your experience at our recommended betting sites.
