Newbury — Yesterday’s Results

Yesterday at Newbury (going: GOOD TO SOFT (5.5)) produced a mixture of tight finishes and a number of non-runners, with Silver Dominion (14/1) edging a close three-way duel in the KBIS Novice Stakes and a pair of strong handicappers, Storm Point and Forty Years On, taking the big prizes later on the card. Several withdrawals and self-certificates impacted the early cards, while the testing Good to Soft surface played its part in connections keeping a handful of runners at home.

Key events and winners

Early in the afternoon the KBIS Novice Stakes was reduced to a three-runner affair after a string of non-runners; Silver Dominion battled on to deny Jimtrott by a head with Amir Lehbab a short-head away in third. In the Eddie Keogh Memorial Handicap Storm Point (4/1) produced a late surge to lead inside the final furlong and win by 2½ lengths. George Scott’s Forty Years On made all the running in the Ardonagh Group Handicap and was well clear at the line. Wild Clary landed the mid‑afternoon handicap for Richard Hannon, Manaar (8/1) impressed in the fillies’ novice, and Mythical Bay completed the card with an authoritative success in the White Horse International Handicap.

Notes: several runners were withdrawn on the morning of the meeting (self-certificates and unsuitable ground were cited for a number of non-runners), and Tanmawwy was pulled up in the Ardonagh Group Handicap. The going proved lively enough to favour horses who can handle give in the ground — it was a factor in connections’ decisions across the card.

Racecourse Guide

A top-class Flat and National Hunt track, Newbury’s left-handed, galloping course provides a true test of stamina, particularly in wet conditions. The highlights of their National Hunt season include the Coral Gold Cup run at the end of November and the Betfair Hurdle, one of Europe’s richest handicap Hurdles, which takes place in February and is increasingly a springboard for live Supreme Novice Hurdle and Champion Hurdle candidates for the Cheltenham Festival the following month. On the Flat, the jewel in their crown is the Group 1 Qipco Lockinge Stakes in May. Newbury can also boast first-class facilities and a superb view of the whole track.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

For a finer, premium experience there are plenty of hospitality options available. There are three restaurants – Lounge 303, The Hennessy Restaurant and the Racegoers Restaurant.

If you’re part of a bigger group or are looking to host friends and family then there is also the option of a private box to hire. There are three different options to choose (Sprint, Hurdle and Chase), with prices ranging from £155 per person up for the Sprint, up to £235 per person for the Chase dining Experience. Each private suite option includes a minimum two course meal, Premier Enclosure ticket and coffee/tea included.

Tickets

There are two main enclosures you can get tickets for at Newbury, which are:

  • Grandstand – Provides good views of the finishing straight and access to bookmakers, restaurants and bar facilities.
  • Premier – Provides premium views of the racecourse and is based level with the winning post. Offers access to premium bars and restaurants, including the Champagne Bar.

The Effect of the Draw

On the straight course, runners drawn low in big fields generally struggle, whatever the going. When there are twenty or more runners, look first at those drawn fourteen and above. Cross out runners drawn in single figures when there are more than twenty runners in races of up to a mile (straight).
