British Champions Sprint Stakes Betting Odds

The British Champions Sprint concludes the flat season for the most exhilarating division, as the best sprinters in Britain and Ireland, and sometimes further afield, contest one last Group 1 prize over 6f. As with every British Champions Day spectacle, it is run at Ascot in October, and with a big field expected, here is how the market currently stands for the race.

Who are This Year’s British Champions Sprint Stakes Favourites?

The British Champions Sprint Stakes has not been a fantastic race for favourite backers in the recent past, but the good news is that this year’s market looks very open, with decent prices available about all horses.

Currently, there are three horses battling to lead that market. Inisherin has been the star three-year-old of the season, putting in a power-packed display in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Ascot. However, in what is proving a consistent turntable of top class runners, he was beaten in the July Cup by the year older Mill Stream, though he then disappointed when sent off favourite in France.

One consistent presence in top class sprint races in recent seasons has been Kinross. No seven-year-old has won this since it became a Group 1 in 2015, but he often peaks in the later stages of a season.

Who are This Year’s British Champions Sprint Stakes Underdogs?

We will know more about some genuine British Champions Sprint underdogs later in the season, as the odds of even some of the fancied runners are sizeable at this point of the season.

Inisherin’s contemporaries Beauvatier and Elite Status are both still in the race for their connections, while both Audience and Montassib have made splashes at different junctures during the season. However, they could all be favourites come the time of the race itself.

Last Year’s British Champions Sprint Stakes Odds

Having been favourite for this race in 2021, Art Power eventually did win this contest at an eye-watering price of 40/1 last season.

Betting Strategies for the British Champions Sprint Stakes

If you are looking for different angles, or even the simplest ways to bet on the British Champions Sprint at Ascot, consider all of the following markets and pointers.

Outright Winner

It is difficult to simply pinpoint the winner of a race such as the British Champions Sprint, but betting “on the nose” can always gain you a greater margin of profit than doing so each-way.

Each Way

However, even though Art Power was successful at 40/1 last season, other big-priced outsiders have come up just short, and would only have rewarded each-way backers. They include Run To Freedom at 150/1 in second in 2022, and Brando in second at 80/1 in 2020.

Draw Biases

Despite being on opposite sides of the track, the last two runnings of the British Champions Sprint have suggested there is somewhat of a bias at Ascot come the day. Kinross was drawn in stall 17 of 18 in 2022, while Art Power was drawn in number 1.

British Champions Sprint Stakes Odds of Past 10 Winners

Only two outright favourites have won this race in the last decade, which featured the nine renewals run at Group 1 level. In the same span, there have been three winners priced at 28/1 or upwards, so do not be shy if you find an outsider which takes your fancy.
