Meydan is a spectacular racecourse development in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The course stages top class flat racing on turf and dirt between November and March. Racecourse Guide
Meydan opened in 2010, replacing Nad Al Sheeba as Dubai’s premier racecourse. It is perhaps the most astonishing venue in World racing and realises Sheikh Mohammed’s vision that Dubai could become an epicentre of racing to back up his global breeding empire.
The venue can hold 60,000 spectators and has the longest grandstand in the world. On Dubai World Cup night, prize money tops $25 million and attracts the best equine talent from around the world. The Dubai World Cup was created by Sheikh Mohammed in 1996 as the richest horse race in the world. Famous names on the roll of honour include inaugural winner Cigar, Dubai Millennium (2000) and California Chrome (2016).
Meydan has a left handed turf track of about eleven furlongs and there is also a nine furlong dirt track. There are chutes for sprints and ten furlong races and the going tends to be good or faster for turf races. There is significant kick-back on the dirt track which generally favours front-runners.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
The redevelopment of Nad Al Sheba Racecourse was estimated to have cost a staggering $1.25 billion and took almost three years to complete. Meydan racecourse occupies one third of a 200 million square foot complex which also features a lavish five-star hotel, horse racing museum and nine-hole golf course.
Dining options include a buffet in the newly renovated Parade Ring Lounge with selected beverages. The Winner’s Circle Restaurant on the second and third floor of the Meydan Grandstand provides a three-course menu as well as a kid’s menu for family bookings. The Paddock View is an upscale restaurant on the fourth floor with an international buffet while the Dubai Lounge is Meydan’s premium restaurant on the first floor. There are also a variety of private suites which can accommodate from 10 to 500 guests.
Meydan Racecourse is part of the Meydan City development in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. There are flights from London Heathrow and Gatwick Airport to Dubai and regional flights from Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle.
Tickets
The Dubai World Cup Carnival starts in January and continues across ten Thursday meetings into early March. The climax of the Carnival is Super Saturday which is the major trials day for Dubai World Cup night which follows at the end of March. The Effect of the Draw
There is a distinct disadvantage to those drawn wide over most distances on turf and dirt. Low to middle stalls are best, so avoid those drawn very wide and look out for horses who run very well from a high starting gate.
