Epsom Derby Tips – Overlooked Outsiders
There is little doubt that some horses, before they have even been born, are bred with the intention of winning the Epsom Derby. So, it must be relatively easy to decipher the Derby puzzle by simply identifying the horses best bred for the job? Well, with recent Derby winners priced at 16/1, 25/1 and even 40/1, this race has caused more than a few shocks in recent years, and when assessing any Epsom Derby betting tips it can pay to identify some overlooked outsiders to keep on the right side of.
Adayar was backed down from morning prices of 50/1 to land the Derby at odds of 16/1 last year, with 50/1 runner-up Mojo Star available at as big as 200/1 on the morning of the race. Aidan O’Brien’s Wings Of Eagles caused a 40/1 shock when running out the Derby winner back in 2017, but he’s nowhere near the biggest-priced winner in the race’s history, with three 100/1 shots landing the Derby, the most recent of those being Aboyeur (1913).

How to pick an Epsom Derby winner
When looking at Epsom tips for any race over the two-day Derby Festival, the track plays a large part in proceedings. Epsom is an undulating track and the 1m4f Derby distance in particular is very testing with runners facing a stiff climb before navigating the tight turn of Tattenham Corner – the home straight has a camber and horses can find themselves unbalanced when making a dash for the line. As such, backing well balanced horses is often useful when attempting to find Epsom Derby winners.
Lingfield and Chester both provide decent tests for 3yo colts and have important Derby Trials that can aid in your search for Derby tips. Three of the last five Derby winners had taken in a trial at Lingfield or Chester prior to their respective victories.
One great supporter of the Epsom Derby has been Aidan O’Brien and the powerful Coolmore operation. This team have landed an incredible eight Derby’s since the turn of the millennium, and six of the last ten renewals have been won by Aidan O’Brien.

How Do Horses Qualify For the Epsom Derby Race?
Somewhat uniquely, horses can be entered for the Epsom Derby up to 18 months before the race begins, and there are several stages where connections can choose to either keep their entry, and pay an additional fee, or withdraw their horse and therefore stop having to pay additional fees.
The initial cost of entering a yearling in the Derby is just £560, but by the time the horse lines up in the race this will have risen to £7,860. There are a number of chances for horses to be entered in the Derby as 2yo and even 3yo horses, with the final entry stage coming on the Monday of Derby week, where connections of horses not holding an entry have the opportunity to fork out £85,000 to get their runner into the race. The Derby tips from pundits can dramatically change if a horse is entered late – as has been the case in recent renewals.
There is no actual qualification system in place for the Epsom Derby and horses do not have to hold a certain rating, or even to have won a race previously, before taking part. This was famously put to the test in 2017 when 1,000/1 shot Diore Lia looked set to take part in the Derby, despite having been well beaten in both previous starts to date. She was withdrawn on the morning of the race due to a pulled muscle.
Fillies are welcome in the race albeit most tend to go for the fillies-only Oaks run 24 hours prior, with the last filly to win the Derby being Fifinella back in 1916. Geldings are not allowed to run in the Epsom Derby.
What is the Epsom Derby Prize Money in 2022?
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, prize money for the Epsom Derby has fluctuated in recent years. Pre-pandemic prize money for the Derby was at an incredible £1.6million, with Anthony Van Dyck’s connections picking up a cool £921,537.50 after that colt’s 2019 victory.
With the lack of crowds in attendance that sum dropped significantly to £283,550 for Serpentine’s all the way 2020 win, albeit still a nice amount for any person to take home. The numbers have risen slowly since then, with last year’s purse amounting to £1,125,000 (winner Adayar’s connections collected £637,987.50). With crowds expected to be back in full attendance for the Derby in 2022, prize money has once again risen, with the winner picking up £850,650.
Despite these eye-watering figures, however, the true value in finding an Epsom Derby winner is that this horse is likely to become a much sought after stallion. The likes of Galileo and Sea The Stars have far exceeded their race earnings by becoming leading stallions once their race careers have concluded, and this is in no small part thanks to a Derby win being on their respective CVs.
