Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Runners & Riders

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe field is one of the most eagerly awaited in all of racing, as it will inevitably contain every horse, bar injury, who could lay claim to being the best middle distance horse in Europe that year. The race is run over 1m4f at Longchamp at the end of the flat season, giving the Classic generation time to match or even surpass their elders, as Ace Impact did so impressively in 2023.

This year’s field can be seen below, alongside their best odds of winning the championship race.

Who are the Top Three Favourites to Win this Year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe?

The competition at the head of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe market continues to grow as the race approaches. Far in advance though, the betting does not tell us much about any potential favourites, with many of the potential candidates either yet to fully emerge, or to have staked a true claim in a big race around Europe as yet.

We will provide more depth into the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe favourites here, with three horses to be nominated as the leading contenders.

Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Horse Entries & Selections

As of last season, the maximum number of runners for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has been increased from 20 to 24, showing a commitment to ensuring the best possible field should there be a particularly high number of outstanding entrants during a given year.

It is unlikely that the field for this year’s renewal will get anywhere close to that; 15 went to post in Ace Impact’s victory lap last year although in both 2014 and 2022, the then maximum field of 20 was reached. An extra few runners would only add to the competitiveness of the great race.

Otherwise, horses must be aged three or upwards in order to run in the contest. The Classic generation went six years without success between Enable and Ace Impact a year ago.

Which Trainers Have Historically Had the Most Success in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe?

With twice as many victories in the race as any other trainer, Andre Fabre is by far the most successful handler in the history of the Arc. he has claimed the race on eight occasions, becoming the winning-most trainer in the race’s history back in 1998 with Sagamix’s success, and claimed his eighth win courtesy of Waldgeist in 2019, 13 years on from his seventh.

Several trainers have won the race on multiple occasions after him, although only eight horses have ever won the Arc twice, the most recent being Enable in 2018. In fact, Waldgeist denied her a place in history as the only triple Arc winner when relegating her to runner-up in 2019.

Her rider for her two Arc successes was Frankie Dettori, who has tasted Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victory on more occasions than any other jockey. He has won it six times, the first coming via Lammtarra in 1995, with Enable’s second success also his most recent, and likely last.
