1000 Guineas Betting Tips
One of the five Classics run throughout the flat season in Great Britain, the 1000 Guineas is exclusive to fillies. Taking place over one mile at Newmarket, just like the 2000 Guineas, it has been run for over 200 years.
The first renewal was won by Charlotte back in 1814, five years after the open equivalent. Famous names such as Sceptre, Pretty Polly, Pebbles and Minding all appear on the roll of honour, as do Sir Henry Cecil and Aidan O’Brien within the trainers’ column.
The 2025 renewal is to be run on the first Sunday in May. Here is what our experts think of the race.
1000 Guineas Odds
Who are this Year’s 1000 Guineas Favourites?
The 1000 Guineas favourites will not sort themselves out until much further down the line, as the race will not be run until the start of the next flat season. As such, we are waiting for this season’s juveniles to stake their claims for success in the race.
Who are this year’s 1000 Guineas Underdogs?
Just as with the favourites, it is impossible to label any horse a 1000 Guineas underdog at this stage. Only when the race gets closer will we understand the betting markets in greater detail and be able to analyse and recommend any outsiders or underdogs who may perform well in the race.
Last Year’s 1000 Guineas Odds
There were 16 runners in last year’s 1000 Guineas, so it was a seriously competitive race. It was won by Elmalka, a serious underdog, who claimed the race at odds of 28/1 for Roger Varian and Silvestre De Sousa.
1000 Guineas Racecourse
The Rowley Mile track in front of the main grandstand is used for the 1000 Guineas. The track is straight and undulating, but those wishing for clues in the 2000 Guineas the day prior in terms of the course may not get what they are after.
Due to multiple runners churning up the course on Saturday, the 1000 Guineas can ride substantially differently compared to the colts’ race 24 hours earlier. Only by watching the rest of Sunday’s racing could one find suitable clues, and even then it is not always easy.
The same likely draw and pace biases are in place in the race as they are in the 2000 Guineas though. Front-runners can often be the safest place to look in the betting, but this is not an entirely consistent rule of thumb.
Are There Any Specific 1000 Guineas Betting Offers?
Betting offers can be for new and existing customers. The best of these will be for the former category ahead of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, however, existing customers at the majority of online bookmakers may receive some form of free bet or odds boost offer for the first fillies’ Classic.
1000 Guineas Trends & Historic Data
Aidan O’Brien is the big name when it comes to flat racing in Britain and Ireland, and the 1000 Guineas has been firmly within his clutches in the last decade, winning all but one renewal between 2016 and 2021. Missing out in the last two years, he will be keen to put that right this term.
Minding, O’Brien’s winner in 2016, is the only winning favourite in the last ten years and this has been a terrible race for favourite backers, with bookies rejoicing when it comes around. Since then, 14/1, 16/1 and 66/1 winners have gone in, with only Love, at 4/1, going off shorter than 9/1 in the betting.
There is no consistently good draw, as expected with the 1000 Guineas, with it varying year upon year. 2022 saw Cachet emerge from stall 3, while Mawj was drawn in stall 17, and Elmalka in the “widest” draw of 16 out of 16, in the last two renewals.
1000 Guineas Horse Entries & Selections
The selection process for the 1000 Guineas is only necessary if more than 25 runners are declared. However, this is exceptionally rarely the case, so the only key criteria a filly must have met is to be three years old at the time of the race.
Entries are made well in advance for the race but are consistently whittled down until the off, with forfeit stages throughout the calendar year beforehand. This leaves a final field usually into double figures, leaving a competitive set of 1000 Guineas runners and riders for punters to have a bet on.
Which Trainers Have Historically Had the Most Success in the 1000 Guineas?
You have to go back to the pre-Victorian era for the name of the most successful trainer in 1000 Guineas history. His name was Robert Robson, whose nine victories are not only the most of any handler in the race but also all arrived within a decade between 1818 and 1827. The 1824 renewal was the only one which he lost.
The modern day great that is Aidan O’Brien is next on the list of most successful trainers in the race’s storied past. He has recorded seven victories to date, the first coming courtesy of Virginia Water in 2005, and though he did not send out another winner for seven years after that, his most recent three winners came in a hat-trick between 2019-21: Hermosa, Love and Mother Earth. He may yet reach Robson’s record of nine 1000 Guineas winners before his career is called.
