Tingle Creek Chase Tips, Odds and Runners 2024
One of the most celebrated National Hunt races outside of the Cheltenham Festival, the Tingle Creek Chase is a rip-roaring 2m contest over one of the most testing chase courses in the UK. Run every year at Sandown, here are the GG team’s selections for the 2024 renewal.

Who are the Top Three Favourites to Win this Year’s Tingle Creek Chase?
The field for the 2024 Tingle Creek is close to being confirmed. With a defending champion likely to be in the midst of action, here are the top three in the betting for this showpiece contest.
Jonbon
The winner of the race in 2023, Jonbon is top of the tree among British-trained 2m chasers. His record over fences is close to exemplary, having won ten of his 12 starts, six of which have been Grade 1 victories. There have only been three races in his entire career where he has not gone off as favourite.
His Tingle Creek win last year was secured despite desperately heavy ground, as he ground out victory over Edwardstone. That is one of four wins from four starts over course and distance, and as with most of the races he will contest this season, he will be the one to beat if lining up.
Edwardstone
Fast becoming Jonbon’s adversary, Edwardstone is still yet to beat his great rival despite regularly giving his all in defeat. However, he is also a former winner of this race, having won it convincingly in 2022 by nine lengths.
Alan King’s charge is a ten-year-old now so is very much into the veteran stage of his career. That said, he was not beaten far in this race a year ago, nor was he very far behind Jonbon at Cheltenham most recently. Expect another game effort, this time to try and regain this Grade 1 prize.
Quilixios
A potential fly in the ointment for Jonbon is Quilixios for Henry De Bromhead. The seven-year-old was top class as a youngster, winning the Triumph Hurdle at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival. However, having not quite reached those heights again over hurdles, he has won three of his six starts over fences.
His best effort yet came last time out at Naas when defeating previous Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Marine Nationale by 7½ lengths. Though he is still yet to prove his consistency, and may be better on quicker ground, he could get into a jumping rhythm upfront.
Who Are This Year’s Tingle Creek Chase Underdogs?
Having finished ahead of Edwardstone in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham last month, Boothill could continue his progression with another big run here. He is best ridden off the pace, so a career best may be incoming.
JPR One won the Haldon Gold Cup handicap at Exeter last time out and looks ready to tackle Graded company again, while another second season chaser in Master Chewy is also of interest if building on his return.
Last Year’s Tingle Creek Chase Odds
Likely to go off slightly longer this year, Jonbon was the 30/100 favourite when winning the 2023 renewal of the Tingle Creek Chase.
Tingle Creek Chase Racecourse
Sandown’s chase course is an iconic National Hunt venue. The Railway Fences down the back straight, which come quickly one after another, ensure this is a thorough jumping test for those running at full speed over 2m. Quick leaps are of the essence, which is why some of the best jumpers, not necessarily the fastest horses, come to the fore. A long run from the pond fence, the third last, towards the straight, ensures one final test of stamina too.
Are There Any Specific Tingle Creek Chase Betting Offers?
Tingle Creek offers will appear in the days building up to the race, usually in the 48 hours between final declarations and the race itself.
Tingle Creek Chase Trends & Historic Data
The Tingle Creek is mostly a predictable race in the modern age of racing. In the past decade there has been a very even spread of winners between the ages of six and nine, with all four of those age groups winning on multiple occasions, and you have to go back to 2008 to find a winner aged outside that bracket (Master Minded as a five-year-old).
It is equally predictable regarding favourites. Five have been victorious since 2016, meaning there have only been three renewals in that span which have not gone the way of the market leader. Since 2014, the biggest-priced winner was Greaneteen, who scored at 12/1 in 2021 when leading home a Paul Nicholls one-two.
Tingle Creek Chase Horse Entries & Selections
Entry requirements are few for the Tingle Creek Chase. A horse must be aged four or upwards in order to compete, with the youngest age group receiving 6lb in weight should they be taking part. Mares also receive their traditional 7lb allowance.
Which Trainers Have Historically Had the Most Success in the Tingle Creek Chase?
By far the most successful trainer in the Tingle Creek’s history is Paul Nicholls. The master of Ditcheat has claimed 12 runnings of Sandown’s most prestigious chase, remarkably winning six in a row between 2005 and 2010 with three different horses winning two renewals each (Kauto Star, Twist Magic and Master Minded).
Nicky Henderson may have won the race on far fewer occasions overall but his three winners have all been noteworthy for their brilliance in Sprinter Sacre, Altior and Jonbon. Philip Hobbs, meanwhile, is the trainer with the biggest hiatus between victories, scoring first in 2001 with Flagship Uberalles, and secondly, 18 years later, with Defi Du Seuil in 2019.
